by Madison V. Fisler

Jan 10, 2014. The New Year is here, and with it comes one of the most highly anticipated winter events of the year. That’s right, it’s about time for Beech Mountain Resort’s WinterFest 2014!

Jan. 11-12, Beech Mountain Resort will once again be transformed into a family friendly haven for awesome winter fun. There are fun activities for all ages, including figure skating competitions and demonstrations, ice sculpting demonstrations, live music from Dr. Bacon and If Birds Could Fly, face painting, the ever-famous cardboard box derby and the official grand opening event for the new brewery, Beech Mountain Brewing Company, said Talia Freeman, Marketing Coordinator at Beech Mountain Resort.

derbySaturday, Jan. 11 will be highlighted by the hotly anticipated grand opening of the Beech Mountain Brewing company. Join your friends in the Alpine Village at 1 p.m. to taste one of three distinct ales created on-site, with consulting from award-winning brewer Will Young of Blind Squirrel in nearby Plumtree, Freeman said.

Try the 5,506 Pale Ale, the crisp Liberty Ale, or even the high gravity Yard Sale Ale. You can’t go wrong with any of these tasty brews on tap at the 100 gallon-per-day capacity facility.

Dr. Bacon will be providing live music for the thirsty brewsters inside the brewery, so don’t miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to try out the brewery for the very first time.

Saturday will also feature delightful ice sculpting demonstrations throughout the day, as well as figure skating groups giving lessons and demonstrations on the ice. Don’t forget to stop by the face painter for a fun experience with the kids as well.

143And who could forget the 2014 WinterFest Rail Jam? Shred the terrain on Jan. 11 and kick off the winter season with a bang! Registration begins at 9 a.m. in Roots, with the contest officially beginning at noon.

Sponsored by Beech Mountain Resort, BMFT, Smith, DaKine, Armada, Skull Candy and spacecraft, there will be great prizes awarded for first second and third in each category of skiers and snowboarders.

And the fun doesn’t end on Saturday. Stop by Sunday for one of the most highly anticipated portions of the event, the ever-popular cardboard box derby!

This annual tradition is a lot of fun for all ages, with tons of fun prizes for fastest derby, most original and best looking vehicles.

Registration for the derby will take place from 9-11 a.m. in the group sales office. Races will officially begin at 2 p.m. after visual judging at noon. For rules and regulations for the cardboard box derby, click here
