WEF’s Flapjack Flip Features Best Raffle Prizes To Date and Local Food, BSL’s Holiday Market on Sat., Dec. 1

By Jesse Wood

Nov. 27, 2012. A stack of “local” pancakes and an awesome raffle benefiting a good cause, all while knocking out some of your holiday shopping and Santa portraits at the same time – what more can you ask for?

The Boone Service League’s Holiday Market and the Watauga Education Foundation’s Flapjack Flip will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Watauga High School.

Watauga Education Foundation’s Flapjack Flip

Held at the Watauga High School, the Flapjack Flip is a pancake breakfast and raffle benefiting WEF. The breakfast, which includes pancakes, sausage, ham, coffee, milk, juice and more, costs $5 per person, and – new for this year – High Country Local First is providing the food.

High Country Local First is a nonprofit seeking to strengthen the community and local economy by supporting locally owned, independent businesses and farmers through education, promotion and networking is providing the food.

Mary Scott of High Country Local First said in an email, “We have local sausage from two area farmers, country ham from the Goodnight family, eggs from a local farm, all natural pancake mix from The Old Guilford Mill near Greensboro, and pure maple syrup from Southernmost Maple Farm in VA.”

Area farmers will be showcasing products and, Scott added, “The last two items were sourced as close as possible, as there is no one in the High Country who is growing and/or processing wheat mixes and maple syrup at this time of year.”

The Flapjack Flip is among the three big annual fundraisers by WEF; The Shooting Stars talent show and the Shooting Stars Golf Classic are the other two events.

WEF is a nonprofit that supports education in Watauga County. Monies raised benefit teachers and students in the form of grants and scholarships. Also, the WEF supports youth literacy by partnering with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Raffle prizes will be drawn at 10:30 a.m. Tickets for the raffle cost $20 and are on sale now. They can be purchased online by emailing info@wataugaeducationfoundation.org or clicking to WEF’s website. Tickets will also be available at the door of the Flapjack Flip.
