Weekend Roundup: Things to Do This Weekend in the High Country; Check ‘em Out, Make Plans Jan. 3-5

Jan. 3, 2014. Brrr! It’s a little bit cold out there! Welcome to our first weekend round up of the new year! Even with the frigid winter temperatures and winter wonderland already upon us, the High Country still has so many exciting events to offer its community and visitors. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country, even on a cold, cold winter weekend.

Chetola Festival of Lights: The celebration will continue at Chetola Resort through Jan. 23. 

Special Olympics Winter Games: This weekend, more than 100 athletes will be taking the slopes for a beloved annual competition held at Appalachian Ski Mtn. These athletes will be competing for coveted titles and leaving it all out on the slopes. But this isn’t just a regular ski and snowboard competition, this one is special. Friday, Jan. 3

Winter Kids Camp: The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is hosting a Winter Kids Camp for kindergarteners through 4th graders. Join BRAHM for art activities, “make and take” crafts, and snacks. All supplies included. Call Leila at 828-295-9099 ext. 3006 to register your child. $10/each.

Saturday, Jan. 4

“Owls” at Elk Knob State Park: A program on owls will be presented at Elk Knob State Park in Watauga County. Meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 4. Meet at the park office.

BeanStalk Little Theatre Auditions: BeanStalk Community Theatre announces auditions for “Nunsense: A Musical ” by Dan Goggin. Auditions will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Hardin Park Elementary School Little Theatre. Those auditioning should prepare a song and be prepared to read an excerpt from the script. An accompanist will be provided, but singers are asked to provide their own sheet music. The cast includes five females ranging in age from 18 to 60.

Magical Brunch: Get ready for the most entertaining lunch hour in The High Country! Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the winter, bring the whole family and enjoy some laughs with local magician/comedian Jay Spry at Bistro Roca.

Crescent Ski Council Competition: This competition is held at Sugar Mountain Resort. Slalom & Giant Slalom competitions for Crescent Ski Council members. Competitions begin at 9 am.

Sunday, Jan. 5

Shred for the Cup: Smith Shred for the Cup Rail Jam at Appalachian Ski Mtn. will take place on Sunday, Jan. 5. Presented by Smith Optics, this event is sure to start the series off right with plenty of great snow for a well rounded and versatile setup designed for all ability levels. World Book Night: The Watauga County Public Library will celebrate world book night on Sunday, Jan. 5. For more information on this event, click here.
