Weekend Roundup: Things to Do This Weekend in the High Country; Check ‘em Out and Make Plans Aug 23 – Aug 25

Aug. 23, 2013. The High Country has so many exciting events to offer its community and visitors, especially in the summer months. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Friday, Aug. 23

Concerts at the Jones House: Every Friday in downtown Boone. FREE! Bring your own chair or blanket. Concerts start at 5:00 p.m. This week’s show features  Bluegrass showcase with Sigmon Stringers; Creekside Grass and Carolina Crossing.

Newland Riverwalk Summer Concert Series: Free summer concerts every friday 6-9 pm, prizes, vendors, dancing, graet music. For more info go to www.newlandbusiness.org This week’s concert features has the drawing for the winning raffle ticket for the John Deere UTV or $5,000.

Bluegrass at Todd General Store: Join us every Friday from late May until Thanksgiving and listen to a variety of live Bluegrass Acts. Dinner will be served at 6pm and music starts at 7pm. Come early to be sure you get a seat.

Music in the Valle: Join Valle Crucis Community Park as we celebrate the 11th anniversary season of Music in the Valle! All concerts begin at 7:00 and end at sundown. Admission is free, but a $5 donation per person to the park is recommended. Pets are welcome but must be leashed. There is absolutely no smoking allowed in the park. Bring a picnic, a blanket or chairs, and enjoy!

Saturday, Aug. 24

Ensemble Stage Presents: Bedside Manners (through Sept. 1): When a brother reluctantly agreed to look after his sister’s country inn while she’s away, he did not anticipate all the wild comings-and-goings! He soon becomes hilariously engulfed in confusion and bewilderment as he tries  to prevent the inevitable meetings of husbands, wives, and lovers in assorted compromising situations. Presented at the Blowing Rock School auditorium.

High Country Half Marathon: The 2nd race in the High Country Triple Crown, the High Country Half Marathon is scheduled for August 24th at 7:30am. The race will start at the ASU Kidd Brewer Stadium and follow a scenic 13.1 miles to end at the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve. All runners will enjoy finisher’s medals, goody bags, moisture wicking t-shirts, overall awards, age-group awards and chances at numerous door prizes.

Watauga County Farmers’ Market: Every Saturday morning from May to November you will find quality locally farmed meats, fresh produce, artisan cheeses, dried and fresh cut flowers, hardy local plants, delicious edibles, and a wide variety of quality crafts. The Farmers’ Market is located in the Horn in the West parking lot beside the Daniel Boone Native Gardens.

4th Annual Car Show: Car show, motorcycle ride, barbeque lunch, live music and more all in Boone! Register cars in the car show or just look at beautiful cars and trucks, ride your motorcycle through the mountains, enjoy great music, eat great Pork BBQ plate provided by Big Mo’s BBQ and bid on great silent auction items. Admission is free and open to the public. Located at Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Boone. 

Lenoir Downtown Farmers’ Market: The Lenoir Downtown Farmer’s Market is a local producers only market. All goods are grown, made, designed or processed by the market vendors. Our vendors include vintners, local grass fed beef and pork, free range eggs, goats milk soaps and lotions, honey, alpaca wools, various produce, local arts and crafts, heritage eggs, herbs and spices, both living and dried, Herbville and Crane teas and sauces, just to name a few. We also feature a variety of live music including Celtic music, classic acoustic rock, Jazz saxophone, and many more. Need another reason? Here it is. Our market often features a specific product from one of our vendors, and we’ll be grilling up something almost every weekend, chicken wings, 100% beef hot dogs, grilled corn, tomatoes, and asparagus! Don’t miss this chance to meet and support your local farmers and producers, and help keep North Carolina foods close to home.

Doc Watson Tribute Concert: A Doc Watson Tribute Concert with the Kruger Brothers, Wayne Henderson and Charles Welch will be featured in a Concert in the Park in Cook Park in downtown Todd. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 on the day of show. Kids 12 and under FREE! Tickets may be purchased at the Todd Mercantile and RiverGirl Fishing Company or online at http://www.ToddNC.org. For more information, call (336) 877-5401.

Benefit Concert featuring Melissa Reaves: Come and join us at the Harvest House in Boone on Saturday, August 24 for a fundraiser to benefit women with breast cancer in the Boone area. The event kicks off at 5:00 pm with a health fair featuring complimentary services, products and a relaxing yoga class. The concert starts at 6:00 and features grammy-nominated local artist Melissa Reaves and her band. This benefit is sponsored by Through Healing Eyes, The Haven, and Bare Essentials Natural Market. Harvest House is located at 247 Boone Heights Drive next to Bare Essentials. Donations are greatly appreciated.

First Annual Rotary Club of Blowing Rock Charity Auction: The auction will feature a wide variety of entries in both a live and silent auction format. A partial listing of items includes paintings by Kevin Beck, Wes Waugh and Nancy Brittelle, a King Sleigh Bed by Robert Bergelin, one week at the beautiful Levigne Villa in Umbria, Italy, a weekend at Snowshoe Resort in Colorado and several cases of fine wine.

Sunday, Aug. 15

Howard Street Exchange Festival: The Howard Street Exchange Festival is happening once again! We had to cancel our last festival in July due to rain, but we’re back this month with more live music, food, beverages, artists, vendors, nonprofits, businesses and other community groups, located on the west end of Howard Street, from Depot to Water Street. This street festival is extra special! In addition to being move-in weekend at the university, this Sunday marks the first day that the Boone Community Network will be live online ready for the public to start using. So come on out, bring your friends, meet some new people, enjoy live performances, and participate in some Boone community culture! Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Linville Falls Winery will both be selling drinks, while Boone’s selection of food trucks will be serving up hot food.

Shrooms and Blooms at Elk Knob State Park: Rainy weather makes for awesome mushrooms. Come out to Elk Knob State Park on Sunday, August 25th at 2:00 p.m. to see what kinds of wildflowers and mushrooms we have in the park. Guest speaker Julie Mullis will guide us through a short PowerPoint presentation before we go out hunting for some bloomers and fruiters in the park. Although it is not a long walk, be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes as we will be on uneven ground. Program will be held rain or shine. Meet at the Park Office.

Music on the Veranda at the Green Park Inn: This Sunday join us for Music on the Veranda featuring The Neighbors. They will play traditional & modern bluegrass with a twist of folk, country, and rock n’ roll! This event is free and open to the public. 

Alpen Summer Concerts at the Pavilion: Join in the summer fun at the Alpen Inn Pavilion on Beech Mountain for free outdoor concerts every Sunday from 5:00 to 9:00 (weather permitting), Memorial Day thru Labor Day. The event is free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, or use seating provided. Food and beverages are available for purchase on the lawn through the Alpen Inn Restaurant. Events are family and pet friendly (permitted on leash). Musical acts scheduled to perform: The Lucky Strikes, Shane Chalke BE Jazz, Smokey Breeze, The Mercury Dames, Sound Traveler, Echo Park, Klee Liles/Klee and Mike Show, Liz Hayes and the Common Threads, Amantha Mill. Music ranges from Jazz, Swing, Old-time Americana, Blues, Beach, Classic Rock-n-Roll and more.
