Coinciding with Veterans Day, the Watauga County Register of Deeds Amy Shook and Watauga County Veterans Services Officer April Pope kicked off their “Thank You for Your Service” program by offering veterans discount cards for the first time Tuesday.

“Whew…what a day!” Register of Deeds Amy Shook said. “We have had a steady line all day of Veteran’s coming in to record their DD214’s and get their Discount Cards, and they are still coming [today on Thursday].”

Shook said that the office recorded 126 military discharge papers (DD214) and issued 182 “Thank You For Your Service” discount cards to veterans.

“We had a very busy, but rewarding day as we saw the smiles on the Veteran’s faces when they received their discount cards,” Shook said. “This is a wonderful way to show our appreciation to these Veterans.”

Shook thanked the number of business that signed up to participate in the discount program. See list below. Yesterday, Shook also thanked Subway, Hardees, and Jimmy Johns for providing refreshments and the special guest speakers, retired General Jim Walker, Dan Meyer with Boone Chamber of Commerce, Donna Lyons – retired Veterans Services Officer, and Finley Hodges – retired military.

“ Lastly, I would like to thank my wonderful staff and April Pope for helping to make this program a success,” Shook said.

Plans are for new businesses to be added to the discount card and more veterans to be issued these cards in the future.

Below is more information provided by Shook on how to obtain a card or support this endeavor.

If you are interested in obtaining a “Thank You For Your Service” Veteran’s Discount Card, please bring your DD214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) and a current driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID to the Vital Records Division of the Watauga County Register of Deeds office between 8:00AM-4:30PM Monday – Friday to be recorded. Veterans who have already had their DD214 recorded in Watauga County just need to bring their current driver’s license or other photo ID and we will issue the discount card.

The Register of Deeds is located in the Watauga County Courthouse, 842 W. King Street, Boone, NC 28607. Please call 828-265-8052 if you have questions or to obtain additional information.

Participating businesses will be listed on the Watauga County Register of Deeds website at www.wataugacounty.org . All Veterans who come into our office will be given a current listing of those businesses who have agreed to participate in the program. Upon issuance, the Veteran will be told that they must show the Veterans “Thank You For Your Service” Card in order to receive the discount or incentive.

Please consider adding your business to our list by completing the enclosed form and returning it to us by mail: Amy J. Shook, Watauga County Register of Deeds, 842 W. King Street, Suite 9, Boone, NC 28607 or email to: amy.shook@watgov.org. We will send you a sign to display in your business (if you choose to) showing our Veterans and your customers that you participate in our program that supports Veterans.

As a business, you advertise in various ways; why not let us help you advertise with our website and distribution lists? You will be showing our residents, but most importantly our Veterans, that you appreciate their service to our Country. A discount or incentive for the Veteran is all we are asking from you. We will advertise your business FREE of CHARGE.

Note: List is as of Thursday, Nov. 12
