Oct. 11, 2012. Tom Trexler,  who serves on the board of directors for Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, recently earned his Credentialed Cooperative Director certificate from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

Trexler, of Watauga County, received his certificate during NRECA’s Regional meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio, before an audience of more than 800 electric cooperative officials from 14 states, including North Carolina.

Today’s electric utility environment imposes new demands on electric cooperative directors, particularly increased knowledge of changes in the electric utility business, new governance skills and a working knowledge of the cooperative principles.  Blue Ridge Electric directors and staff are committed to working through NRECA to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit of their members.

The NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director, or CCD, program requires attendance and demonstrated understanding of the basic competencies contained in five core courses:

¨     Director Duties and Liabilities
¨     Understanding the Electric Business
¨     Board Roles and Relationships
¨     Strategic Planning
¨     Financial Decision Making

NRECA’s Regional meetings continue the Association’s grassroots policymaking process, which begins at the local co-op level and culminates at NRECA’s Annual Meeting.

NRECA represents the nation’s more than 900 private, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide electric service to more than 8,080,327 million people in 47 states.  Represented at the Regional meeting were electric co-ops from: Michigan, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Vermont.  Regional meetings were also held for other states.

Blue Ridge Electric serves some 74,000 members in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Wilkes and Alexander counties.
