This Week’s Friday Concert at the Jones House Features the Buck Haggard Band on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.

Sept. 11, 2013. The High Country’s classic country group, the Buck Haggard Band, and old-timey songwriter, Trevor McKenzie, play the Jones House porch this Friday, starting at 5 p.m., continuing the Town of Boone’s Summer Concerts at the Jones House series.

imgres-1The evening will begin with Trevor McKenzie, an old-time musician and ambassador, who will be performing a set of original songs with friends Owen Margolis, Cecil Gurganus and Brandon Holder. McKenzie has been a regular performer at the Jones House, playing wit the Elkville SSring Band and accompanying Lonnie Ward, but this will be the first time he will feature his original songs.

“Trevor is one of my favorite old-time musicians, and the songs he has written certainly carry that flavor of traditional southern mountain sounds,” says Concerts organizer, Mark Freed.

“I hope this will be the first of many concerts he performs of his original material, because the world needs to hear these songs.”

McKenzie is also an instructor at the Thursday night music lessons at the Jones House and a frequent participant in the Thursday night old-time jam sessions at the Jones House, where he is known to play fiddle, banjo, guitar and occasionally the musical saw. On Friday, McKenzie will be performing on guitar while Margolis, Gurganus and Holder will accompany him with guitar, bass, fiddle, banjo and Dobro.

The Buck Haggard Band will follow McKenzie and friends, bringing their mix of classic country songs. Band leader, George Wilson, fronts the band on rhythm guitar and other members include Ed Main on lead guitar and keyboard, Tracy Brown on bass, Jimmy Cannon on steel guitar and Greg Russell on drums. The band originally formed because of the need for a classic country band in the High Country, and they have been leaders in the fieldin the region.

“These guys are all pros,” Freed said. “They have the stage presence, musicianship, and repertoire that draws their audience in and keeps them there all night. Our concert-goers at the Jones House are going to love this band.”

The Buck Haggard Band is named for Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, and Wilson likes to add that they would have included George Jones in the name if they could have figured out how.

The Concerts at the Jones House are produced by the Town of Boone and sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Mast General Store, Footsloggers, MPrints, Stick Boy Bread Co., Melanie’s and Farmer’s Rentals.
