The Park Rangers at Elk Knob State Park Announce the Family Summer Activities for the Month of June

May 21, 2013. The Park Rangers at Elk Knob State Park are kicking off the summer with a month full of summer fun for the month of June. Check out these great activities, good for the whole family!

elkn_fromsummit2On the Amphibolite Hike, learn why the forests of Elk Knob look so much different than forests just a few miles down the road, and why Elk Knob was established as a state park. Ever wondered why the park has so many special plants, or why the rocks in the park are so important? Find out on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. Hikers should meet at Elk Knob Summit Trailhead and wear hiking boots and hiking attire.

Join a park ranger on Sunday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. to learn about salamanders and how they are great indicators of the state of the environment. Through a powerpoint program you will learn about the native salamanders found at Elk Knob State Park, and afterwards you will see if you can find any of them in the park! Participants should meet at the Elk Knob State Park office. 

This is the Year of the Wildflower in North Carolina State Parks. See all the beautiful flowers for yourself on a guided ranger hike at Elk Knob State Park on Sunday, June 16 at 2 pm. Hiking attire to include boots is recommended. The hike is weather dependent.  Please call the park office if the weather is questionable at 828-297-7261.  Meet at the Elk Knob Summit Trailhead.

Families who have never experienced the joys of camping are invited to join the staff at Elk Knob State Park for an enjoyable evening under the stars on Saturday, June 22 through Sunday morning, June 23. You may come no earlier than 3 p.m. to start setting up and activities begin at 4 p.m. We will provide tends if needed, a dinner of hotdogs, chips and s’mores that you will cook over a campfire, and interesting activities and learning experiences throughout the night.  You should bring snacks for your family, non-alcoholic drinks, breakfast for your family for sSunday morning and blankets or sleeping bags. All campers must be 6 years or older and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Special thanks to the many contributors and program presentrs: Friends of High Country State Parks, Footsloggers, Mast General Store, Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, Audobon Society and volunteers Julie Mullis, Hattie Cox and Corky Safley.
