The 32nd Annual Watauga County Humane Society Rummage Sale Scheduled for June 22-23

by Madison V. Fisler

June 21, 2013. For the 32nd year in a row, the Watauga County Humane Society’s annual rummage sale will take place on June 22 and 23 at the National Guard Armory. The sale runs both days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All items at the sale come from community donations.

imgres-1“We got some of the best donations this year that we have ever gotten,” said Dee Dundon, who had headed up the rummage sale each year for the past 29 years.

Last year, the rummage sale raised over $18,000 for the humane society. This year, they hope to raise even more. The proceeds from this sale go toward operating expenses at the Humane Society including salaries, medicine and medical treatments for the animals, veterinary costs, electricity and water for the building and everything else that is needed to run the shelter.

During the rummage sale, there will be a raffle for items like a handmade quilt and four day pass tickets to Tweetsie Railroad. Raffle tickets will be $1 each or six for $5.

The Feastie Boys food truck will also be on the premises to serve food to hungry customers.

“We have been in our new shelter for two years now, and we worked toward our goal for this shelter for years,” said Dundon. “The animals have always been happy and taken care of that thats something that I don’t know how we do, but we do it. The animals are always happy and loved.”

The Humane Society depends entirely and completely on volunteers for the rummage sale to be a success.

“We could not do it without them,” Dundon said. “There are volunteers working all week long.”

On Sunday before the rummage sale, large trucks will be loaded up with donated items to take to the Armory. Early Monday morning, the trucks will start to be unloaded for the sale to begin.
