The 21st Annual Avery Agriculture and Horticulture Fair Will Take Place from Sept 10-14 at Heritage Park

Sept. 10, 2013. Now in its 21st year, the 2013 Avery County Agriculture and Horticulture Fair will take place at Heritage Park from Sept. 10-14. 

With everything a good fair has to offer, including beauty contests, tug-of-war, a mud bogging race, chainsaw competitions, corn hole tournament and much more, there is something for everyone at this fun, family friendly event. 

d4b5b89092510bf1af96a221ffa52a97Aside from all of the lawnmower races, pig wrestling, coon dog trails and more, there will also be numerous competitions for things like baked goods, culinary perishables, cut flowers and more. This weekend marks the beginning of the entry period for competitors to enter their finest wares to be judged in the various competitions, said Aneda Johnson, a director for the Fair. 

Only baked goods can be entered on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 8-9 a.m. Entry fees for most items is just $1, except for Christmas trees which are $15 each and nursery or landscape items which cost $10 to enter. 

The fair opens at 5 p.m. each day and 10 a.m. on Saturday. The schedule of events for the Avery Agriculture and Horticulture Fair is as follows:

Tuesday, Sept. 10

  • Tug-o-war: students versus teachers 

Wednesday, Sept. 11

  • Educational school day from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Tug-o-war: fire department, police department, Sheriff’s department, EMS
  • 4-H Talent Show inside the tent
  • Cupcake wars at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 12

  • Tug-o-war: 3rd and 4th grade sports teams
  • Tug-o-war: 5th and 6th grade sports teams

Friday, Sept. 13

  • Mudbogging race starting at 6 p.m.
  • Dash for Cash

Saturday, Sept. 14

  • Pig Wrestling from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Lawnmower Racing from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Chainsaw and crosscut saw competition

Food contests and corn hole tournaments will take place each night at the fair. There will also be food contests taking place each night, as well as rides and exhibitions including the Heritage Center.

“The lawnmower race and mudbogging race are a hit,” Johnson said. 

“The young kids love the rides, and for the kids there’s the talent show and beauty pageant. There’s really something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a huge family fun event.”
