2013 Sales Tax Holiday Weekend Happening August 2 to 4, Likely To Be Last One With Repeal In Tax Bill

By Jesse Wood

July 22, 2013. The upcoming sales tax holiday, which has occurred during the first weekend in August since 2002, will likely be the last one in North Carolina.

Gov. Pat McCrory is expected to sign off on the tax bill both the House and Senate passed last week that includes, among many other measures, the repeal of the sales tax holiday starting in 2014, according to The Associated Press.

The sales tax holiday begins Friday, Aug. 2, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4. During the holiday, shoppers can save money on clothing, school supplies and computers. Participation from retailers is required, and retailers may not tell shoppers to obtain a refund from the N.C. Department of Revenue, according to a release from the N.C. Department of Revenue.

“The popular event exempts clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreational equipment of $50 or less per item; computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item from sales tax. Tablet computers and netbooks of $3,500 or less per item qualify.  An eReader with enhanced computing functions, such as internet access, e-mail, and the ability to download and run applications, is a computer for purposes of the sales tax holiday period.  Basic eReaders are not computers and are subject to tax during the holiday,” the release noted.
