by Madison V. Fisler

June 21, 2013. For the fifteenth year in a row, Blood, Sweat and Gears is coming back!

The intense, grueling 100-mile English century ride will take place on June 22 in Valle Crucis, starting at the Valle Crucis Elementary School. The looped route will circle Boone along the way.

parkwayDuring the ride, each cyclist will climb a combined 8,800 feet in combined elevation. This grueling and physically demanding route will showcase the beautiful, scenic communities of the Watauga County area, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, Snake Mountain and old US 421.

For cyclists who prefer a shorter route, there is an option to participate in the 50-mile half century. Both routes will be completely supplied with aid stations to assist riders along their way.

Registration for these events closes ad midnight on June 17. For more information and to register, click here. There is no registration on the day of the ride, and there is no mail-in registration. This year, registration comes with a competitor tee shirt.

The schedule of events for the day of the ride is as follows:

  • 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. – Packet pickup at Valle Crucis Elementary School
  • 7:30 a.m. – 100 Mile Ride starts
  • 7:45 a.m. – 50 Mile Ride starts

But this ride isn’t just for fun. This is one ride that gives back. This years’ Blood, Sweat and Gears is supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Western North Carolina.

At the event, riders and spectators can also purchase Blood, Sweat and Gears custom gear, whose proceeds will go to benefit the Jeremy Dale Fisher Fund and the Russell Fund, established by the American Red Cross in Watauga County which provides assistance to local families that are displaced by fire, flood or similar disasters. Donations are also made to the Volunteer Fire Departments in the area who have been long-time supporters of the event.

On Sept 14, athletes can check out the Watauga County Red Cross Run 4 The Red Marathon and Half Marathon. This event is a fundraiser for the American Red Cross.
