Jan. 6, 2014. Skiers over age 70 get the special treatment at Sugar Mountain Resort. Each year, the ski resort celebrates athletes over 70 years young with the annual Septuagenarian Party, which will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the resort.

02“This event has been around for more than 20 years, longer than I have been here at Sugar,” said Kim Jochl, vice president of Sugar Mountain Resort.

“We tend to think that people over 70 are really only getting younger, and we admire them when they are still skiing and being active. We always hope we can emulate them when we get older as well. We think that its very important to keep people in the sport as long as possible, as it promotes fitness and health for a lifetime.”

The Septuagenarian Party will take place at 12 p.m. at the Last Run Lounge at Sugar Mountain Resort, complete with a cake and recognition of the oldest skier.

“There is always a big crowd for this event,” Jochl said.

16“Right now we have about 60 people signed up, and we will take RSVPs until tomorrow. There is always a great crowd, especially when the skiing is good and there is a huge amount of camaraderie.”

Anyone 70 and older can qualify for complimentary skiing and riding at Sugar Mountain Resort. To obtain your complimentary skiing and riding privileges, please visit Sugar Mountain Resort’s administration office, located on the second floor of the main lodge building and present a photo ID. A season pass will be issued to you for a processing fee of $10. You may also chose to receive a daily ticket at no charge.

“The skiers are always happy, and sometimes I think they wonder why we provide them with free skiing,” Jochl said.

“We have a big crowd of people that come up from off of the mountain, from places like Charlotte and even Tennessee. It’s always a fun, diverse crowd of people from all over, from weekend visitors to full time residents. It is going to be a great time for everyone.”
