Ratchford of Vidalia Moves To Next Round in Fire on the Rock, Chefs From Twigs and Canyons Battle Tonight

By Jesse Wood

April 17, 2013. Sam Ratchford of Vidalia in Boone continues on to the next round of Fire on the Rock after winning Tuesday night’s contest against Craig Miller of Jackalope’s View of Beech Mountain.

The secret ingredient was Lusty Monk Mustard, which has the tag line of “kiss mediocre mustards goodbye.” A family-owned business out of Asheville, Lusty Monk Mustard crafts these mustards: “Burn in Hell Chipotle Mustard,” “Original Sin Mustard” and “Altar Boy Honey Mustard.”

While Ratchford scored higher on all three courses, it was his chipotle mustard ice cream and orange cake with pomegranate coulis, mustard caramel, candied zest and whipped cream that clinched the victory. That creation scored the highest score of the night, ringing in at a weighted – between the diners and professional judges – 83.05.
