Local Couple Realizes a Dream Years in the Making with Opening of New Restaurant on King Street, Nosh Cafe

by Madison V. Fisler

Oct. 24, 2013. Nosh Cafe in downtown Boone has only been open for less than a month, but the unique eatery, which serves everything from chicken n’ waffle sliders to gourmet soups and pastries, has already garnered a following that even the biggest New York cafes would envy.

“The community has been very supportive, and we have many customers who have come in almost every day for three weeks!” said Sara Proctor, co-owner and baked-goods guru of the cafe.

“It really hit home with me early that people love our food enough to come back every single day.”

It all began years ago, when the Proctors started to think about opening a restaurant or even a food truck in the High Country.

“My husband (Matthew) was the executive chef at Storie Street Grille in Blowing Rock and I was baking under Mrs. Prock’s for a long time, and we were unhappy with where we were,” Proctor said.

“We saw the ‘for rent’ sign on the space, and we decided to give it a shot! We had been talking about opening a restaurant for years, and this was our chance.”

And from the looks of things, that chance sure has paid off. In just three straight weeks of business, Nosh has drawn a loyal following of customers, from students from nearby Appalachian State, to locals out on the town and even High Country visitors who drop by to check out the new location.

“‘Nosh’ means a light meal or snack, and we were looking to have something local and fresh that people could grab and go, in and out, without having to spend a lot of time here,” Proctor said. “We even offer delivery and call ahead service! We have one customer who calls in every morning when he leaves his apartment and we have his sandwich ready for him when he gets here!”

While Sara remains the baked goods guru, churning out biscuits, cinnamon rolls, scones and oh so much more, her husband Matthew is the mastermind behind most of the dishes, like breakfast wraps, delicious soups and the ever-popular chicken n’ waffles sliders which, by the way, are served with a choice of sausage gravy or a special relish.

“A big part of our food is our aioli,” Proctor said. “You could really put it on anything and it would taste good.”

Coming into Nosh, customers should expect “quick friendly service and delicious food.”

And of course, vegan and vegetarian options are available. The Proctors are currently working on getting gluten-free items on the menu as well.

Nosh is located on King Street directly beside Capone’s Pizza. The hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday; and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
