Knitting with Alpacas: Local Photographer Shares Images from Apple Hill Farm

Photos by Cindy McEnery

Ever toured a mountaintop alpaca farm? That’s just what local photographer Cindy McEnery did over the weekend, and she’s shared some of her favorite images from the adventure.

McEnery participated in one of the fun monthly activities held at Apple Hill Farm in Banner Elk.

“On Saturday, I visited Apple Hill Farm in Banner Elk to observe the monthly knitting with alpacas session.  Guests sit in the grove and knit as alpacas graze behind them,” she said. “It was interesting to see the whole process — the alpacas produced the wool; it was spun and hand dyed on the farm; sold in the store; and then, it was being turned into interesting projects!

“Pam Craver from Fayetteville was knitting wash clothes to be included in Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes this fall. The knitters were joined by curious alpacas; and assisted by dogs. Eggs were gathered and sun flowers were abundant. It was quite a day. Apple Hill Farm, owned by Lee Rankin, is a wonderful place for a family adventure.”

Apple Hill Farm recently earned the Sue Wilmoth Award for Tourism Advancement, which was awarded by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Boone and Watauga Tourism Development Authorities.
