Kmart in Boone To Close This Coming September

By Jesse Wood

June 16, 2014. First opened in March of 1979, Kmart in Boone is closing after a 35-year run.

Located along Blowing Rock Road in Boone, Kmart will close to the public in mid-September, according to Howard Riefs, corporate communications director for Sears Holding, the corporation that was formed with the merger of Sears and Kmart.

The Boone store has 41 employees, most of whom are part time or hourly, according to Riefs.

“Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores,” a statement from Sears Holding reads.

The Boone store, which is leased by Sears Holding, will begins its liquidation sale on June 29.

At the end of 2011, the company announced that nearly 120 “underperforming” Sears and Kmart stores were closing, USA Today reported at the time. The Boone store wasn’t on that list. However, WXII in the Triad reported three days ago that the Boone store along with a High Point location would be closing.

In a statement provided by Riefs, “Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home.”
