Just In Time for Winter Weather, First Flakes Opens in Foscoe To Provide Speed, Quality and Best Value Around

Dec. 19, 2012. About 23 years ago, Steve Hurley founded First Flakes in Winston-Salem to try to catch the snowboarders and skiers from the Piedmont Triad heading towards the slopes of the High Country, which should be heating up as soon as the weather cools off in the next few days.

Just recently, Hurley opened a second store in Foscoe, located across the street from the Foscoe Pharmacy on N.C. 105. With this location, he’s moved closer to the source, much closer to the shredded powder of the High Country.

“We’re just trying to catch the renters before heading up the mountain,” Hurley said.

First Flakes rents three levels of skis and snowboards. It will also rent and sell goggles, gloves, helmets, pants, bibs, jackets and more. Hurley mentioned a selection of new and used skis, snowboards, boots, bindings and poles are available, too.

When describing his business, Hurley said that First Flakes aims for speed, quality and the best value around for its customers.

“We plan to get our renters in and out on the slopes fast, yet give renter-specific attention. This will not be an assembly line process,” Hurley said, adding that proper boot fitting and choosing the right board and/or skis is vital to having fun on the slopes.

On its website, First Flakes is described as a “cozy, rustic, Mountain-style winter sports shop” that is Christian-family owned and operated.

Hurley said the Foscoe shop will have the best deal in the High Country with its “Day at the Beech” deal, a lift ticket and ski/snowboard rental combo. He also mentioned that college students will have even “better rates” and high school students will receive “great deals” on snow days.

Depending on how much snow drops on the High Country and how well the winter season goes, Hurley said he is considering operating year round, offering goods for different outdoor adventures such as fishing, tubing and much more.

First Flakes is located eight miles from Boone on N.C. 105. For more information, call Hurley at 828-963-2360 or click to www.firstflakes.com.
