Nov. 22, 2013. The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce announced that the 2013 Watauga Business of the Year is “homegrown” ECR Software Corporation of Boone.
“Founded in 1989, our winner’s idea was to help small retailers use ever-advancing computer technology to assist with sales data. The company’s services are geared to helping retailers with everything from point of sale date, product research, customer interaction, to in-store marketing – automating the entire process,” said Jason Triplett, Boone Area Chamber of Commerce chairman.
The company currently employs 60 local professionals in Boone, and their professional headquarters remains on Howard Street in Downtown Boone. Aside from engaging the community as a local employer, the company also engages students at Appalachian State University in computer science and business.
The Rick Phillips Award of Merit for Development for housing was awarded to McGuire Construction for the Highland Woods Apartments located on Highland Hall Road in Boone. The apartments were designed to blend into the Boone architecture with stone, shingle siding accents, timber stairs and trim accents. The landscaping will also be low-maintenance with a color scheme that blends into the natural surroundings.
University Nissan located on U.S. 421 received The Award of Merit for Development in the large commercial category for its design which blends into the natural surroundings without losing commercial identity.
In the future, a new category is being considered for establishment: Best re-Use/Re-Purpose Project which will be for those taking an existing building or site and redeveloping it into a new function.
