Friday Trail Reports Don’t Get Much Better for Ski Resorts: Cold and Sunny With Plenty of Fresh Powder

Jan. 18, 2012. The weather doesn’t get much better than this for snowboarding and skiing at the local resorts in the High Country. With six to 12 inches landing on all three resorts and crystal clear skies.

 All the trail reports below were compiled at 11 a.m.

 Beech Mountain Resort

Beech Mountain Resort has four of seven lifts open with 10 of the 15 ski trails open as well. The resort has a 14- to 38-inch base. Last night snow downfall added 12 inches of new snow, and the snow guns are blowing as we speak.  

 Beech Mountain Resort’s website reports that it is 16 degrees and sunny.

 The resort has a 7,000-square-foot outdoor skating rink, where children 4 and under skate for free with a paying adult. Operating hours are noon to 8 p.m. daily. The two-hour sessions cost $15 and include a skate rental.

 Sugar Mountain Resort

Sugar Mountain has five lifts operating and 14 slopes running on the 115-acre ski and snowboard terrain – plus three tubing lanes and the ice-skating open. Sugar Mountain Resort received 10 inches of snow from yesterday’s storm. That downpour and with the snow guns blowing, Sugar Mountain has a 10-to 40-inch base.

Sugar Mountain Resort’s website reports that the resort sees sunny skies and the summit is currently 17.6 degrees and the base is 23.5 degrees.

Ice Skating is open with sessions at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Tubing Park is open with sessions at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Appalachian Ski Mountain

App Ski Mountain has 7 slopes open with a 10- to 21-inch base packed with fresh powder. Snowmaking began last night when conditions – temperature and humidity – were right. That with six inches of fresh snow should provide some awesome conditions at the Blowing Rock resort. 

These slopes are open: Appaltizer, Avery’s Appal, Strudel, Orchard Run, Lower Big Appal, Upper Big Appal and AppalJack – with AppalJam to open this afternoon. All six lifts are open.

Ice Skating is open, and the temperature is currently 24 degrees with sunny and clear skies.
