For Animals Sake, the High Country’s Animal Retirement Home, Hosts Their Second Annual Tailwagging Tagsale

By Rebecca Mullins

Dec. 4, 2013. On Saturday, Dec. 7, For Animals Sake brings us their second annual Tailwagging Tagsale. This fundraiser will feature one of a kind items such as antiques, paintings, and fresh baked goods as well as Christmas pictures with Santa Claus. All proceeds go to For Animals Sake’s Twilight Inn, their housing facility for retired homeless pets.

Come on out to the Tailwagging Tagsale on Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock.

For Animals Sake is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a home for special-needs and senior animals with no home to call their own.

Maybe it became too costly for the owners or perhaps some other circumstances kept them from being together, but now there’s a place for those elder pets to find the comfort, affection, and help they need at the Twilight Inn, located adjacent to the Veterinary Hospital, Whispering Waters Animal Clinic.

Veterinarian and owner of Whispering Waters Animal Clinic, Dr. Maggie Federhart, founded For Animals Sake back in 2000.

The idea of an animal retirement home had come to her when an elderly couple in their 90’s had to turn away their 25 cats for the sake of their own health. The local humane society, already overflowing with animals, could not take them. So the cats ended up residing at Dr. Federhart’s veterinary hospital until new owners could be found.

Following that time, Federhart made it her goal to create a haven for unwanted, elderly animals and so created For Animals Sake and its Twilight Inn. To date, she’s had dogs, cats, and even a miniature horse stay at her inn.

The Tailwagging Tagsale will help raise funds for the organization’s latest goal, the addition of 5 acres that lies adjacent to the Twilight Inn. With this land, For Animals Sake would be able to build a green barn, a cat house, and their Twilight Trails, a collection of pathways for walking dogs.

The fundraiser is still collecting items for donation to put up for sale on Dec. 7. Here’s your chance to do some early holiday cleaning before the family comes and clear out your garage, attic and basement. All those special treasures that might have outlived their use to you would make a perfect treat in another’s hands, so send them on down to the Twilight Inn and make an animal’s life a happier and longer one.
