The crew at Doc’s Rocks Gem Mine recently concluded their annual Mining for a Cure fundraising campaign, and on Wednesday presented a check to the team at Watauga Medical Center’s Seby B. Jones Cancer Treatment Center.

This year’s campaign exceeded the $10,000 goal and Doc’s Rocks contributed a check for more than $17,000.

“It gets bigger every year. More people hear about it and more local businesses are participating. It gets more and more of a following every year,” said Randy “Doc” McCoy, who owns and operates Doc’s Rocks with his family. “It’s awesome. It’s such a good feeling.”

The McCoy family knows firsthand that most supporters of cancer patients, treatment and research are motivated to make a difference by their own personal experiences with the disease.

“They know what it’s like. They see the struggle and the financial burdens,” said McCoy. “I think the only way we can, as a person, fight cancer, is to get behind something and support. Stand behind the cause.”

That’s why they work year-round to raise the money that they donate every year, and why every penny goes straight to local cancer patients.

“We have given to bigger organizations and upon doing research we realized that only a small percentage goes to what they say it goes to, whether it be research or whatever. Giving here at the cancer center, 100 percent goes to patients directly,” McCoy said. “That’s the Cancer Resource Alliance, which pays for art therapy, music therapy, massage therapy and more. It also helps support the Cancer Patient Emergency Fund, which pays for anything the patient needs, whether it’s rides to the hospital, gas for their house because they can’t afford to pay for it and medical bills. It pays for medical bills, treatments, you name it.”

Still want to contribute? Make checks payable to CRHF and drop them off at Doc’s Rocks, 111 Mystery Hill Lane in Blowing Rock, or at the Cancer Center, 338 Deerfield Road in Boone.
