Since last December, there have been major changes in U.S. policy towards Cuba. Diplomatic ties have been reestablished, a U.S. embassy will be in Cuba for the first time in half a century, regulations and sanctions of trade, travel and financial services to Cuba are being reestablished and there will be more openings for international investment from the U.S. This event seeks to inform the public about all of these issues and give advice on new opportunities to do business with Cuba.

“We’re hoping this event will connect people with contacts and resources they might need and to open up dialogue and questions,” said Meredith Church-Pipes, international programs coordinator for the Walker College of Business.

Speakers and panelists will include:

  • Humberto Blanco, director for the Center for Research of the Cuban Economy in Havana
  • Saul Berenthal, chief operating officer of Cuban Heritage Experiences based in Durham
  • Ángel Ayala, business and financial consultant from Havana
  • Peter Thornton, assistant director for international marketing for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
  • Keynote speaker: John Kavulich, president of U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economical Council, Inc.

Church-Pipes later commented on the importance of “good changes based on hospitality and what’s best for both countries.”

Lunch will be provided for people who R.S.V.P., though people can show up at the door to participate in the discussions.

This event will also be streamed live on ASU’s website.
