May 3, 2013. Coming off of their first win (210-118) against the Carolina Rollergirls Bootleggers B-Team, the Appalachian Rollergirls will host their next bout at home.
The match is located at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, on May 4 against The Apocalypstix from Atlanta. The bout begins at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tailgating is encouraged in the parking lot behind he Convocation Center prior to the match.
“We are in for a challenge for sure,” said Jennele Vaquera, the Appalachian Roller Girl’s team captain.
Tickets for the bout are $12 at the door or $10 in advance. Tickets can be purchased at Lucky Penny, Black Cat, Woodlands Barbecue, Boone Drug at Deerfield and at the Convocation Center box office.
Since the Appalachian Rollergirl’s are a non-profit organization, all proceeds from the bout will be donated to the ASU chapter of Autism Speaks. There will also be a pancake breakfast fundraiser on April 28 at Applebee’s. Tickets for the fundraiser are $7.
For those who know a little about the sport, there have been a few changes to the rules to make the bouts quicker and more action packed. There are no longer minor penalties, just major ones, which should make the sport easier to follow. In addition, the Jammers will now be able to go on the first whistle instead of the second.
For those who have never been to a roller derby bout, you’re in for a treat.
“You should expect to see some serious female athleticism,” Vaquera said.
“It is a very intense and strategic sport. For those who have never been, I would suggest looking it up so you can follow the bout better.”
After this bout, Appalachian Rollergirls have four more this season. Their next home bout is scheduled for Aug 3 against The French Broads. To view their bout schedule and for more information about the Appalachian Rollergirls, visit their website here.
