Nov. 16, 2012. Have you ever thought about starting your own business, but didn’t know where to start? Working for yourself can open a new world of possibilities including financial independence, flexibility in scheduling, and the ability to make a living doing something that you enjoy.

The ASU Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting a “Start Your Own Business” workshop series to boost aspiring and existing entrepreneurs in the Watauga County community. The workshops are a series and therefore build upon each other. Space is limited so registration is required.

Two of ASU’s Walker College of Business entrepreneurship professors developed the course material and faculty and staff from ASU will lead the workshops. The workshops are sponsored by the Watauga County Economic Development Commission, Watauga Committee of 100, and Appalachian State University.

Series Description:

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 6 to 8 p.m.
Workshop #1 – Business Idea Development – Evaluate the pros and cons of entrepreneurship and focus on business idea development. Participants will create and assess various business ideas according to their skills and interests along with how the ideas align with the needs of the community.

Tuesday, Dec. 4, 6 to 8 p.m.
Workshop #2 – Key Elements of Running a Business – Learn about the key components of running a business such as human resource management, marketing, finance, planning, and risk analysis and begin developing your own business strategy and plan.

Tuesday, Dec. 18, 6 to 8 p.m.
Workshop #3 – Making It Happen! – Put knowledge, ideas, and skills to work to start your business! Participants will learn how to assess markets with the help of existing entrepreneurs and community leaders. Each participant will be paired with a mentor who will review and give constructive feedback on business plan drafts.

The workshop series is free to community members and is open to anyone wanting to start or grow their own business. All workshops will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Appalachian Enterprise Center. We ask that you attend all workshops to complete the series.
