1st Tracks and Fatty’s Snowboards of Boone Hosting a K2 Snowboards High Ollie Competition on Wednesday, Nov. 7

By Paul T. Choate

Nov. 5, 2012. On Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1st Tracks and Fatty’s Snowboards of Boone will be holding their annual big sale and will also hold an ollie pop contest as part of the K2 Snowboards “Pop This!” competition series.

The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the 1st Tracks and Fatty’s Snowboards shop on N.C. 105. The winner of the high ollie competition will take home a K2 Fastplant snowboard.

“That’s a nice $560 deck, so they’re getting them a sweet deck,” said Jeff Kattner, manager, who added, “When they’re competing right here in our parking lot they’re competing at the same time to be the highest in our region — talking about the Southeast region. So if they wind up having the highest amount of air in the region, in the spring they will get to go out to Seattle, Wash. to compete for the nation.”

The winning ollie pop last year, Kattner said, was 36 inches, and he feels the local kids can do better than that.

“I question if 36 inches is that high or not. I mean you’re only talking three feet. … I’m sure there are probably some kids around here that can do it,” he said. “This is something that a kid from this area actually could potentially win.”

Kattner said 1st Tracks and Fatty’s has been trucking in the snow in preparation for the event. In recent days, they have been going around to local parking lots and clearing the snow out. He said there is currently a “massive amount” of snow behind the shop. K2 Snowboards will also be setting up a ramp system for the competition.

In addition to the contest, this event will be 1st Tracks and Fatty’s biggest sale day of the season, with huge discounts on skis, boards, boots and clothing. Kattner said there will be a great selection of apparel from companies’ lines last year at discounted rates.

Beech Mountain Resort has also donated lift tickets, which will be given out during the event.

Food for the event will be catered by local restaurant Casa Rustica.

There is no cost for admission to the event and entry into the ollie pop is also free.
