Feb. 25, 2013. Beech Mountain was one big time machine this past weekend as the town and ski resort combined to host the second annual Totally 80s Retro Ski Weekend.
The weekend was filled with 80s-themed activities, including live music each night, a “big hair and radical air” freestyle jump competition, appearances by the Carolina Ghostbusters, and the SkiNC.com 80s Apparel Contest on Saturday night at the Beech Tree Lounge.
The apparel contest attracted 27 entries, and the freestyle jump competition had 19 participants, said Talia Freeman, marketing director at Beech Mountain Resort.
First place in the apparel contest, which carried a prize of $500, went to Jeff and Tara Ford of Cincinnati, Ohio, who came to Beech with two other couples for the retro weekend. There were multiple winners in the freestyle jump event.
“We had a significant skier turnout, many of whom participated in the activities. I was very impressed with the amount of visitors who arrived in 80s attire, particularly those in the attire contest,” Freeman said. “Overall, it was an amazing weekend, with a fun and positive vibe. We are getting a lot of feedback from people who enjoyed themselves, and they’re already calling and asking about next year.”
Businesses throughout town offered a variety of specials on everything from meals to lodging to ski rentals.
“We had a good weekend and it seemed like a lot of people were up here that might not have been otherwise during the last weekend of February,” said Fred Pfohl of Fred’s General Mercantile. “The ski conditions were great and I feel it was a great effort by everybody involved.”
