Winter Exhibit at Carlton Gallery Featuring Beck, Sullivan, Braitman, Dennis, Carlton

Carlton Gallery’s 33rd Winter Group Exhibition continues with a focus on the artists’ work exhibited in a show this year. These artists are Kevin Beck, Amy Sullivan, Andrew Braitman, Warren Dennis and Toni Carlton.

Kevin Beck – Winter Sunrise – 18 x36

Kevin Beck is a local artist who enjoys painting en plein air. He is able to capture on canvas the mood, shadows, light and tranquility of local scenes and vistas found in the High Country. He paints landscapes which bring out the beauty found in all four seasons. ‘Winter Sunrise” is a en plein air painting of a local sacred vista on Holloway Mountain Road depicting the warm glow from the High Country’s unique color palette of the season.

Amy Sullivan’s abstracted oil and wax barns are rendered in a striking color palette of green and white, as well as several paintings in bright primary colors. Her paintings project lines and silhouettes in lieu of the actual subject being revealed. Sullivan carves into the wax and paint with sharp edges which allows an outline of her subject matter to project allowing the viewer a personal interpretation of each painting. “A Colorful Old Creature” is rendered in analogous colors of reds, oranges and yellows with a balance of warm and cool purples to honor the disappearing barns and farms of North Carolina.

Andrew Braitman – Looking Toward Grandfather – 60×48

Andrew Braitman exhibits a fine collection of contemporary abstracted landscapes ranging from large 72×48 to small 5 x 7 oils on canvas paintings in which he interprets the landscape using his astonishing color palette along with his masterful compositions. “Looking Toward Grandfather” is rendered in shades of violet and yellow ochre with a silhouette of winter trees casting shadows in the cool mountain stream with a backdrop of Grandfather Mountain.

Warren Dennis, a retired longstanding art professor at Appalachian State University, exhibits his new cubist style works for the 21st century. After many years of painting his elongated figures of “ordinary people doing ordinary things”, Dennis now renders his people and objects in a more Picasso style but with the subject matter identifiable. Dennis’ sense of humor and understanding of human nature is fully projected onto his oils on canvas. The “Drummer ‘is a humorous interpretation of Dennis’ elongated figurative work as well as displaying an essence of his recent cubist style.

Toni Carlton’s paintings combined with mixed media collage incorporate images from personal life experiences, a love of dance, written messages, calligraphy and photographic images from foreign travels. Her inspiration comes from different cultures, expressions of movement, heart connections and spiritual awareness. Calligraphy in various languages, along with her woven fibers adds a three dimensional element to her artwork. “Flowing Through the Threads of Our Lives – Spirit of Peace #1” is the first part of a triptych of three 48”x48” canvases inspired by movement, flow and merging layers of colors with a combination of contemporary and traditional ancestral handwoven patterns. This focal point of weaving covers the written chant, “Spirit of Peace”.
