Summertime is Right Around the Corner! Here’s Our Guide to Camps in the High Country

Looking for a way to keep your kids happy and active this summer? Sign them up for one of the High Country’s many summer camp programs and keep them moving, learning and making friends this year.

Listed below, our guide to all things summer camps in the area include programs for every interest.

Camp Cogger (KAMPN4Autism)

(Wildcat Ridge Rd, Deep Gap, NC)

Its goal is to provide an overnight camping program, providing fun with hiking, fishing, music, art and other activities in a relaxed setting. Both children with autism and their family members can participate in this nature-based camp.

Age: Open to all ages

Date: July 1-3, 8-10, 15-17, 22-24 and 29-31 – Fri. 12 p.m.-Sun. afternoon

Holston Camp

(PO Box 428, Banner Elk, NC)

Established in 1955 in the mountains of WNC on 150 acres of forest, lakes and streams, Holston welcomes kids seeking a refuge from the seasonal heat and a sanctuary for spiritual, mental and physical growth. Your kids are welcome to stay in the overnight (for all ages) or day camp (for elementary school children).

Age: 1st-12th grades – go to website for specific groups

Date: June 12-Aug 12

Price: $110-$599 – price goes up as your kids get older and varies depending on need

Hands on History Camp

(Horn in the West and Hickory Ridge Museum, Boone, NC)

We are proud to announce the Horn in the West and the Hickory Ridge Living History Museum will be hosting a Hands on History Camp. This camp will put students in the shoes of frontiersmen, Native Americans, and early settlers of the region. Art Camps

LMC Creative and Performing Arts Camp (CAPA)

(Lees-McRae, 191 Main Street, Banner Elk, NC)

Explore drama, dance, music, technical theater and other art forms with CAPA!

CAPA, a model arts program for youths in WNC, discovers creative potential and individual self in a relationship to the world. The creative and preforming arts are essential to the youth’s environment, one that is safe and respectful and is central to building a cohesive and collaborative learning experience.

It strives for five goals:

  1. To deliver a comprehensive curriculum which is supported by the National Standards for Art Education.
  2. To provide opportunities for youth to discover their own creative potential through a wide range of arts disciplines.
  3. To encourage and nurture the development of self-awareness and confidence.
  4. To foster an appreciation and awareness of the impact the arts have in society.
  5. To develop a sense of community through rich arts experiences.

App State’s Camp UREC

(Appalachian State University, Student Rec Center, 150 Bodenheimer Drive)

Explore ASU’s campus through a day camp setting!

Camp UREC strives to have your camper have fun by exploring new things. Their full participation will be required.

Age: Rising 2nd-6th graders (general camp) and rising 7th-9th graders (Campers for Leadership Training (C.I.L.T. and Adventure Week)

Date: June 13-July 29, Mon.-Fri. 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with drop off at 7:45 a.m. and pick up at 5:30 p.m.

Camp Buckeye

 Dirt Camp

(130 Highway 105 Bypass)

Dirt Camp strives to create a space for open-ended free-play outside, exploring art materials and making new friends.

There will be daily speakers who teach the campers about the community. such as gardening, animals, the Watauga County Public Library, the Hospitality House, food, yoga and music.

Age: Ages 3 and up

Date: June 20-Aug. 12, running from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with after care available as necessary and no camp June 13-17, July 5-9 and Aug 15-19

Price: $78/w for three days or $120/w for five days with a sibling fee of $35/w for second or more children – must have a week’s tuition to hold your spot!

Honey Bear Kids Camp

Honey Bear Kids Camp strives to have kids learn to enjoy and explore their natural surroundings in a fun, positive way, encouraging confidence, teamwork and healthy peer relationships. Its goal is for campus to learn through numerous outlets and enjoy a summer of memory making fun.

Continuing Education Division’s Extreme Super Summer Camp

The Continuing Education Division at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute will offer its “Extreme Super Summer Camp” for kids this year. There will be two topics covered in each session, and campers will be separated into different age groups.

The schedule includes the following sessions:

  • June 27-July 1 – Little Robots (Building Robots and Robots Everywhere!)
  • July 11-15 – Bigger Bots (Same as above) or Destination Science (Mad Science! and Science Adventures)

Watauga’s “Kids in the Kitchen” Summer Camp

Do you have kids who love to cook? Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute at the Watauga Campus will offer its first summer camp for kids at its new professional culinary arts kitchen.

Your child will learn to prepare cupcakes, puff-pastry desserts, tarts, pizza, and so much more if they attend all or one of the three sessions including “Baking Magic,” “Chocolate and Candies” and “Pizza! Pizza!”

Date: June 20-24 (Baking Magic), July 18-22 (Chocolate and Candies) and Aug. 1-5 (Pizza! Pizza!) – all sessions will be Monday-Friday, 1-4 p.m.

Contemporary and Hip-Hip Intensives

Keagan Jump adds the finishing touches to her pizza creation during an afternoon session of “Kids in the Kitchen” Super Summer Camp at CCC and TI. CCC and TI is now registering for Super Summer Camp and is offering a wide variety of activities. Sessions will begin the week of June 20.
