Library, Senior Centers Offer Free Tax Assistance for 2018 Filing Season

Jan. 19, 2018. The Watauga County Public Library is in its eighth year of offering tax assistance for the 2018 filing season. The library program began in 2011 with Rao Aluri as the Site Coordinator; Tim Dannenfelser, a graduate student in Accounting at Appalachian State University, will be the new Coordinator. The (VITA) Volunteer for Tax Assistance program provides free income tax preparation and free electronic filing for eligible low to moderate-income Watauga County residents. The program operates in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and receives financial support from the Friends of the Library and the IRS.

MerleFest 2018 Announces New Additions to Lineup, Early Bird Tickets on Sale Now

Jan. 19, 2018. MerleFest, presented by Window World and slated for April 26 – 29, is proud to announce five additions to the 2018 lineup: The Mavericks, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Mandolin Orange, Alison Brown, and Brandy Clark. The annual homecoming of musicians and music fans returns to the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. MerleFest has already announced over 75 artists for 2018, including Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, Rodney Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Elephant Revival, The Devil Makes Three, aMidnight Jam hosted by Town Mountain and Jim Lauderdale, and many more. The rest of the distinguished lineup for MerleFest 2018 will roll out over the next few months.

The Winterfest 2018 Series: Everything That You Need to Know About the Polar Plunge, Jan. 27

Jan. 17, 2018. Have you ever jumped into ice water? Have you ever seen someone else jump into ice water while wearing a costume? If the answer is no to either of those questions, then you will not want to miss Winterfest’s Polar Plunge! Participators will jump into the frigid water of Chetola Lake while raising money for local charities. The event will take place on Saturday Jan. 27 at Chetola Lake. National Mentoring Month celebrates the benefits of youth mentoring across the country. Every day in communities across the country, caring adults volunteer their time with mentoring programs to create consistent and supportive relationships to young people.  At its most basic level, mentoring is successful in real life because it guarantees a young people has an adult to turn to and that they have a guiding hand to help them in dealing with day-to-day challenges. At a more complex level, there is a powerful mentoring effect that ultimately makes our communities stronger

Watauga Medical Center Earns 4-Star Rating for Quality

Jan. 8, 2018. Watauga Medical Center recently received an above average 4-star rating for its quality of patient care services from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) scores more than 4,000 hospitals across the country using a Hospital Compare rating system ranging from 1 to 5 stars (5 being the best). The CMS ratings are publically available on the Hospital Compare website and are intended to help consumers more easily decide between hospitals in their area.

Sign-Up to Volunteer at the Special Olympics NC Alpine Games this Jan. 7 and Jan. 8

Jan. 5, 2018. The 2018 Special Olympics North Carolina Alpine Games will be held this Sunday and Monday, January 7th and 8th at Appalachian Ski Mountain. The Special Olympics are looking for volunteers to assist with equipment, instruction, timing, and awards during the two-day event. This is an excellent opportunity to serve alongside others for an event that leaves a lasting impact on so many lives in the High Country.  All are encouraged to come cheer on this year’s Winter Olypians at the event. Volunteers must be at least fourteen years of age.

Featured Events at the Museum: BRAHM Enriching the High Country

Jan. 5, 2018. The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, commonly known as BRAHM, serves as an excellent source of  artistic enrichment for the High Country. BRAHM is a staple in Blowing Rock, and is known for providing entertainment for all ages to enjoy. January is a very exciting month at the museum- between the continuation of the film series, two Cork & Canvas sessions, Arctic Art, Hands-On Ice Carving, The Afternoon Art Club, the Doodlebug Club and the excellent exhibits, there is something for everyone at BRAHM. Tickets Available for the Annual Beech Mountain Winterfest Beer Festival, Held on Saturday Jan. 6

Jan. 3, 2018. On Saturday, Jan. 6, Beech Mountain Resort will host their annual Winterfest Beer Festival, which will feature several North Carolina Craft Breweries and Cideries and will have two live bands. There will be over 50 ales and ciders to taste. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased in advance for $25.  At the door, tickets may be purchased for $30.  Tickets for designated drivers are available for $15.  The festival is a fundraiser for the Beech Mountain Ski Education Foundation.
