What’s New at the Farmers’ Market? Shopping at Horn in the West on Saturday, May 14

Another gorgeous day is ahead at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market this Saturday. Bring family and friends and enjoy a spring morning of open-air shopping for next weeks’ groceries and gifts. Enjoy a cup of coffee, eat a biscuit, scone, or a slice of pizza, listen to some great music, and soak up the good life!

This week, enjoy live music from the Spice Creek Ramblers while you shop.

Take your little shoppers by the Kid’s Corner to check out the mini market and the seed planting station.

The market operates from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday this summer at 591 Horn in the West in Boone.

Here’s a look at what local vendors have in store for you this weekend:

The Farmer’s Wife – Fried Apple Pies and no sugar Added Fried Apple Pies. They taste Yummy too.

New Life Farm – cauliflower, curley kale, dino kale, collard greens, lettuce, cucumbers, and scallions, as well as pasture raised pork, chicken, and turkey. All of animals are pasture raised and fed non-gmo feed.

Mountain Roots – Lots of asparagus, mixed mustard greens, branch lettuce, collards, several varieties of kale and radishes. Fruit trees, blueberry bushes, native azaleas, rhododendrons, Japanese maples, service berries, some perennials & more. Over 20 varieties of heirloom & op tomato plants along with other vegetable & herb seedlings (peppers, kale, collards, cabbage, etc).

Harmony Acres Soap – Handmade Natural Bath and Body Products

Blue Ridge Apiaries – locally produced wildflower honey, varietal honey, infused honey, creamed honey, bee pollen, as well as additional hive products.

Shady Grove Gardens and Nursery – Bright colored tulips, squash and cucumbers transplants.

Moretz Mountain Orchard & Farm – Free range eggs, "pesticide free green onions and garlic, winter squash,  potatoes,  white sweet potatoes,  apples, dried apples,  strawberry rhubarb jam and Kennebec seed potatoes.

Sunshine Cove Farm – organic microgreens and broad variety of organic starter plants for the garden.

Zydeco Moon – varieties  of certified organic heirloom tomato plants including Cherokee purple, Blevins’s red oxheart, yellow and red brandywine and Black cherry.  Gallon size tomato plants which are 2 feet tall and will produce tomatoes much earlier in the year, helping you to get tomatoes before the blight.  Four inch pots with plants a foot tall.  White cucumber plants, pepper plants and basil plants will also be available.  Produce – romaine and buttercrunch lettuce, mixed lettuce, spring onions and a limited supply of asparagus.

Against the Grain – ramps (last week), butterhead lettuce, radishes, spinach, green garlic, cornmeal, sorghum meal, pastured, gmo-free pork and pastured, gmo-free chicken.

Country Ham’s Biscuit Bar – baked, sage and brown sugar rubbed pork belly from Against The Grain Farm, Heritage Homestead goat chèvre, arugula, and local scrambled eggs. Strawberries and hand whipped cream. Gluten free/vegan biscuit option. Fresh squeezed orange juice and, of course, local molasses and honey!

Springhouse Farm – certified organic spinach, mixed baby beets, head lettuce, arugula, vegetable starts, and pastured pork (with samples of sausage). Nitrate free hot dogs and bacon as well as six types of sausages and other cuts available.

Mountain Memories Farm – free samples from the grill including lamb or pork.  We offer all cuts of both along with a wide variety of special sausages in link and bulk..  Another new item we offer in pork this year will be fresh bacon. We also have eggs! Website – comand like us on facebook.

Creeksong Farm – green onions, arugula, spinach, free range eggs, herb starter plants, vegetable starter plants, and all cuts of grass fed beef.

Tumbling Shoals – certified organic spinach, boston-bibb lettuce, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, scallions, baby lettuce salad mix, arugula, spicy salad mix, radish, japanese salad turnips (hakurei turnips), green curly kale, dinosaur kale (a.k.a. lacinato kale, lack kale, cavelo nero…), collard greens, strawberries, fresh cut herbs: cilantro, dill, oregano.

Brooks Farm Beef – high quality grass fed beef that we have brought the past nine years to the market! Ranging from steaks, roasts, beef tips, ground beef and many other cuts. This beef is for the consumer who wants red meat that is healthy and tastes great.

Earth Harmonies – handmade gemstone artisan jewelry. Lots of new wire wrapped pendants, in copper and sterling silver. Summer anklets, bracelets, rings, and crystal necklaces.

Fire From The Mountain – plenty of chipotle salsa, smoked habanera BBQ sauce, enchilada sauce and four varieties of hot sauces. From the Farm – free range eggs, some asparagus, red and green romaine lettuce, green butter head lettuce, arugula, and spinach.

Heritage Homestead – flavored chevre, feta, goat milk fudge and our new product goat milk gourmet caramel sauce.  Yum!!!!

Owl Creek Breadworks – variety of European-style, naturally-leavened hearth breads, and a wide selection of croissants and other pastries.

Goldenrod Gardens – gorgeous flowers and bouquets on demand. Any bouquet can also be tied with a hand dyed silk ribbon of your choice. Mint for derby day, rainbow salad, arugula, and pea tendrils are perfect for May meals.

Octopus Gardens – Produce: baby bok choy. Nursery plants: vegetable, flower, and herb starts including many tomato varieties, cabbage, kale, edible flowers like nasturtiums, marigolds, pansies. Zinnias, calendula, parsley, strawberry plants, sage, yarrow, basil, tulsi (holy basil).
