Adults in the High Country — there is somewhere you should “bee” next Tuesday, April 12 from 5 – 7:30 p.m.: the 15th Annual Adult Spelling Bee at Watauga High School.

The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual spelling bee is offered to promote education in the High Country. This year’s proceeds will go the Watauga High School Innovation Lab. Krispy Kreme and Chick-fil-A of Boone will sponsor the event.

The spelling bee will be divided into three rounds (easy, intermediate, difficult). Teams of four will attempt to correctly spell words in each category. If a team misspells a word, “bee bucks” may be purchased to remain in the game.

There will be awards for best costumes and table decorations. Best spellers will win various prizes.

The admission fee for the event is $100 per team. Admission includes two bee bucks that can be used during the spelling bee. Additional bee bucks can be purchased for $10 each.

Watauga Innovation Academy

The Watauga Innovation Academy is a “‘school within a school’ that gives students from any grade level the opportunity to earn college and high school credit at the same time.”

The Watauga Innovation Academy has partnered with Caldwell Community College to offer this dual-credit program. Eligible students are able to choose a focused pathway with a four-, five- or six-year plan to receive a high school diploma and college certificates or degrees. Credits earned from graduation will be transferable to other community colleges and universities, so academy students can complete degrees in less time than traditional students.

Applications for the academy are now being taken. Current academy students should be sure to reapply if they intend to continue enrollment in the academy.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be grade 9 – 12
  • Have 3.0 GPA or higher (except for freshmen)
  • Complete an application

Program areas of study for the 2016/2017 academic year will be:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Computer Technology
  • Cosmetology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology: Drafting
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology: Welding

Applications to the academy include student and parent information, student and parent signatures, teacher information for recommendations and counselor information for a statement. Applications are completed online. You can access the application here.

If you need a paper copy of the application, you can contact Tierra Stark at Watauga High School at [email protected].
