The Appalachian region is one of the most biodiverse in the world and for generations people have learned the many uses of local plants. Along with this material, medical mountain women took advantage of a heritage of healing prayer, charms, and spells that came from their Scotch-Irish ancestors.

Byron Ballard has served as a featured speaker and teacher at Sacred Space Conference, Southeast Wise Women’s Herbal Conference, and other gatherings. Her book “Staubs and Ditchwater” debuted in June 2012 and the companion volume “Asfidity and Mad-Stones” was published in Oct. 2015. Byron is currently working on her latest book, “Earth Works: Eight Ceremonies for a Changing Planet.”

Afterward, be sure to visit BRAHM’s Atwell Gallery to see a related exhibit titled “The Art of Native Plants.”
