The WNC Shriners are making what has become an annual pilgrimage to Blowing Rock, bringing their Summer Ceremonial and attendant parade to the town May 30-June 1. For the first time ever, Feeding Avery Families, Inc. (FAF) hosted "Empty Bowls for Avery" on Saturday, May 17 to fight the war on Hunger in Avery County. After months of preparation by dozens of volunteers, local residents were treated to a colorful display of 202 handmade pottery bowls created by students, professionals and seniors from age 14-91. The Second Annual Spring Mountaineer Mud Run a Massive Success; More than 200 Participants Got Muddy

On Saturday, May 17, the Spring Mountaineer Mud Run took place at the High Country Fairgrounds. The event drew more than 200 participants despite the damp, cold weather. Movie Review: ‘Godzilla’ Takes One Shortcut After Another with an Ineffective ‘Less is More’ Approach

It isn't a good idea to approach a Godzilla movie with a "less is more" attitude. The gold standard of the "less is more" horror movie is "Jaws," which this movie wants to be so badly. In that film, you didn't actually see much of the shark, but you were scared nonetheless. There isn't much of Godzilla in this movie, and the attitude seems to be that if you're impatient waiting for her to show up, then it's your fault for not appreciating the nuanced way the film is subtly toying with your expectations. The annual race, which will be held at the High Country Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 17, already has several hundred registered to participate, with plenty of room for more. Students from Appalachian State University will soon arrive in France to compete in Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. The team has partnered with Universite d'Angers to create Team Reciprocite to compete in the competition inspired by the U.S. Solar Decathlon.
