Whatever Brains Returns to Black Cat in Boone Saturday, Feb. 7 with Vitamin Pets, Homework Mountain

By Jay Salton

Jan. 30, 2015. On Saturday, Feb. 7, Black Cat Burrito in downtown Boone will host yet another exciting concert showcasing local talent. Nothing Cool Ever Happens in Boone will bring back Raleigh-based art punks Whatever Brains and local support will be provided by garage rockets Vitamin Pets and electronic duo Homework Mountain.

whateverbrains.jpgTickets for the show are $5 and will be available at the door the day of the event. The show will begin at 10 p.m.

Whatever Brains’ six-piece ensemble draws influence from punk, power pop, thrash metal and a plethora of other genres to create a glorious, bizarre musical cocktail. Their nearly unclassifiable music is a think to behold in a live setting, featuring adventurous sets that are truly one of a kind. Their last foray into Boone was in February 2013 to extremely good reception, and the band has spent some time on the road most recently with Parquet Courts, another band known for its unique take on punk.

“I like to hold fast to the ‘genre smashing’ reputation that these guys have rightfully earned,” said Devon Tuttle, show organizer and proponent of alternative entertainment in Boone.

“They are triumphantly unclassifiable.”

Supporting Whatever Brains will be local favorites Vitamin Pets, a group that just played its first Boone shows last year and is excited to start 2015 with such a noteworthy band. With its upbeat, crowd-satisfying style of garage rock that features violin and keytar, the band is expected to give the crowd quite a jolt of energy before Whatever Brains takes the stage.

On what to expect from the show, River Allen, a member of Vitamin Pets, said, “Energy, complexity and something wild.”

Also appearing will be Homework Mountain, a Boone-based project that features members of the Naked Gods.

“For this seldom-seen project, those dudes trade in their rock n’ roll chops for adept and startling kosmische musik – transcendent and pulsing synthscapes, reminiscent of early Kraftwerk or Cluster,” Tuttle said.

“If you’ve ever heard Naked Gods rip a gig then you know these guys can be trusted to engage an audience and blow minds.”

This show has many Boone concert regulars excited and is expected to pack a full house. But leave the kids at home, because this show is for audiences aged 18 and up.

Black Cat Burrito is located at 127 North Depot St. in downtown Boone.
