Sneak Peak of Red June for MerleFest Fans During Winter Concerts at Jones House Friday, Feb. 28

Feb. 28, 2014. The Town of Boone continues the Winter Concerts at the Jones House series with Red June on Friday, Feb. 28 starting at 7:30 p.m.

_MG_5069_2Hailing from Asheville, Red June dubs their music “beautifully distilled original American music,” blending a strong sense of tradition with the song writing of Will Straughan and John Cloyd Miller and the fiddling prowess of Natalya Weinstein. All three members of the group are strong singers, and they feature two and three-part harmonies and tasteful musicianship, with Straughan on resonator guitar, Miller on mandolin and guitar and Weinstein on Fiddle. Their style seamlessly blends bluegrass, old-time, country and American roots music that makes new songs sound both fresh and familiar.

The band has been busy recording a new album that will come out in April, which they plan to debut at MerleFest.

“Fans will get a sneak peak at some new tunes and songs at the Jones House on Friday,” said concert organizer Mark Freed.

This will be the band’s third full-length album, following Beauty Will Come which came out in the summer of 2012 to critical acclaim. This will be the band’s first album with Organic Records, out of Arden, North Carolina.

The members of Red June met at a picking party in Asheville in 2005, and three years later the three friends formed the band and released their debut album, Remember Me Well in 2010. The recording was voted the number one regional release of 2010 of WNCW. The band has continued to hone its sound, and the members have continued to write and compose some excellent music. Last year, Miller won the Chris Austin songwriting competition at MerleFest.

Red June returns to the High Country after outdoor and bar performances in Banner Elk and Boone last summer, this time to play in the more close and controlled house-concert style space at the Jones House’s Mazie Jones Gallery.

“Red June’s music is perfectly suited to an environment like the gallery in the Jones House,” Freed said. “The audience will be able to hear and appreciate the subtle nuances and sounds that these guys so carefully craft.”

Friday’s performance continues the Jones House Winter Concert Series, which will conclude on March 18 with Handsome Molly, and Irish and old-world roots band from Charlottesville.

Tickets to the Red June concert are $20 and seats are limited, so reservations are encouraged. For more information about this concert, including reservations, please contact Mark Freed at the Jones House at mark.freed@townofboone.net or 828-262-4576.
