Lees-McRae College Theatre Arts presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee starting Thursday, Sept. 28

BANNER ELK, N.C. — How well can you spell? For the children competing in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, six will enter, but only one speller will leave with the title of C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N. The Lees-McRae College Theatre Arts production, The 25th Putnam County Spelling Bee, will kick off the fall semester with performances from Sept. 28-30 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. in Hayes Auditorium and Broyhill Theatre.Directed by Gabriel Vanover, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is praised for its unique balance of charm and comedy.

The Tony Award winning musical follows an eclectic group of six mid-pubescent students as they vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.

Put simply, “it’s about adolescence and the joys and awkwardness that comes along with it,” Vanover said.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for students/children and free for Lees-McRae students, faculty and staff.

Tickets will only be sold at the door. Sales begin one hour before show time. All seating is general admission.

Please note: This production is rated PG-13 and is not recommended for children.
