January 2, 2023 BOONE, NC – Appalachian Theatre patrons and the public submitted 333 film suggestions last fall which led to dozens of screenings of their top choices in various cinematic genres, including beloved musicals, favorite sci-fi, and classic western movies, plus offerings on two different holiday film series. Now the App Theatre staff finally gets to have their say! January 2023 will showcase favorite Classic Movie “Staff Pics” with five films scheduled at 7 p.m. on each Tuesday throughout the month.

The Muppet Christmas Carol” at The Appalachian Theatre: Jim Henson’s Muppets Take on the Dickens classic on Dec. 17

December 8, 2022 BOONE, NC – Muppet favorites Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, and all their lovable friends join forces for a unique take on the Dickens classic when “The Muppet Christmas Carol” is screened at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 17 on the Holiday Family Film Series at the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country. “The Muppet Christmas Carol” is a 1992 Christmas musical comedy drama film directed by Brian Henson (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jerry Juhl. Adapted from the 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, it stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, alongside Muppet performers Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson, and Frank Oz.

“The Polar Express” First Train to Stop in Boone since 1940; App Theatre Screens Holiday Family Film on December 13

December 7, 2022 BOONE, NC – Not since the historic flood of 1940 forced the closure of the Linville River Train Station has a train stopped in downtown Boone, N.C. That fact will change at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13 when Tom Hanks and “The Polar Express” steam into the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country for its inaugural Holiday Family Film Series. “The Polar Express” is a 2004 computer-animated fantasy adventure film co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on the 1985 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. The movie features human characters animated using live-action and motioncapture CGI animation. It tells the story of a young boy who, on Christmas Eve, sees a mysterious train bound for the North Pole stop outside his window and is invited aboard by its conductor. The boy joins several other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus preparing for Christmas.

In Their 90th Year, Barter Theatre Finally Comes to Boone: State Theatre of Virginia Performs “FROSTY” at App Theatre on Dec. 16

December 7, 2022 Richard Rose was the producing director of the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia for 27 years, retiring on December 31, 2019 with over 700 plays and musicals to this credit. “To the best of my knowledge,” he said “this is the first time we’ve ever performed in Boone, so we’re long overdue for our debut production! Rose is referring to a pair of Barter Players performances of “Frosty: A Musical Adventure” scheduled for 2 and 7 p.m. on Friday, December 16 at the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country. This original production was created by Barter’s playwright in residence Catherine Bush with music and lyrics by Dax Dupuy. The family-friendly musical is a perfect introduction to live, professional theatre for young audiences with a running time of one hour and tickets priced at only $8 for children and $10 for adults.

Appalachian Musical Theatre Club Presents Their Fully Student-Run Production of “Something Rotten!”

December 2, 2022 BOONE, NC – The Appalachian Musical Theatre Club, also known as AMTC, includes over 200 registered students in its membership and puts on a fully student-run musical every academic year. With a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, they are back strong. December 1, 2022 BOONE, NC – “The Star ,” a 2017 computer-animated biblical comedy directed by Timothy Reckart, is the next movie selected by the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country for their 2022 Holiday Family Film Series. The screening is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 10 and runs 86 minutes in duration. It is purposefully scheduled so theatre patrons and their families can participate in the Boone Holiday Parade at 2 p.m. that afternoon on King Street where the historic theatre is also located.

The 1988 Christmas fantasy comedy film directed by Richard Donner and written by Mitch Glazer and Michael O’Donoghue is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, at the historic theatre on King Street in downtown Boone, NC. “Tombstone” Set for Nov. 22 on App Theatre’s Western Series; Cult Classic stars Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot & Bill Paxton

November 15, 2022 BOONE, NC – “Every town has a story. Tombstone has a legend.” The Classic Western Film Series at the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country wraps-up at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22 with Tombstone, the American Western film directed by George P. Cosmatos that has become a cult classic since its release in 1993. Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) and his brothers, Morgan (Bill Paxton) and Virgil (Sam Elliott), have left their gunslinger ways behind them to settle down and start a business in the town of Tombstone, Arizona. While they aren’t looking to find trouble, trouble soon finds them when they become targets of the ruthless Cowboy gang. Appalachian Theatre Announces TWO New Holiday Film Series: “A Christmas Story” on November 25 and 26 is First of Eight Screenings

November 15, 2022 BOONE, NC – Fresh off the community celebration of their 84th birthday, the Appalachian of the High Country is announcing two holiday film series whose screenings return the 1938 Art Deco venue to its original cinematic roots. With eight films from November 25 through December 22, it is the largest schedule of classic movies announced by the theatre since its reopening three years ago. “A Christmas Story” on November 25 opens the Holiday Classic Film Series. It will be followed by “National Lampoon’s Christmas Holiday” on November 29, “Scrooged” on December 6, and “White Christmas” on December 22. These classic films were selected from hundreds of submissions by audience members and the general public in a survey conducted last summer.

Watauga Community Band to Perform at Appalachian Theater

November 9, 2022 The Watauga Community Band is taking its Fall concert “to the street…” King Street, that is, with the band’s first event at the restored Appalachian Theater. Director Billy Ralph Winkler said, “In our first combined event, the community band will take to the stage featuring American composers with a patriotic theme as we approach Veterans Day.” Winkler said, “The concert will feature music by American composers such as John Philip Sousa, Eric Osterling, Clifton Williams, William Harbinson, John Prescott, and others.   Several standard patriotic selections will be performed including an Armed Forces Salute, where all veterans will be recognized by their special song selection.”

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” Concludes Halloween Film Series, Tim Burton Animated Musical Fantasy Set for Oct. 30 at App Theatre

October 27, 2022 < BOONE, NC – The final screening on the wildly-popular Cinema Classic Halloween Film Series at the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country is Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” on Sunday, October 30. Audience members are strongly encouraged to come to the App Theatre in Halloween costume. This special showing starts at 2 p.m. in the afternoon with a general admission ticket price of just $5 per person. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film directed by Henry Selick (in his feature directorial debut) and produced and conceived by Tim Burton. Danny Elfman wrote the songs and score and provided the singing voice of Jack. The principal voice cast also includes Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix, and Ed Ivory.
