Veterans To Be Honored Friday, Oct. 27, by Foscoe Ruritan Club

On Friday, Oct. 27, area veterans will be honored during the final Local History Dinner of 2023, a seasonal series of events hosted by Foscoe Ruritan Club.

“With Veteran’s Day just around the corner, this will be a special time for us to recognize our veterans,” said club President, Floyd Moore. “ We have invited a special guest speaker, Kevin Riley, who will be reminding us of an important history lesson, and it’s a perfect way for us to end our year of history dinners here in Foscoe.”

An authority on his subject, Riley shared with High Country Press that he will be speaking primarily about the D-Day Squadron’s 2019 North Atlantic transit — with 15 historic DC-3 warbirds to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Normandy invasion.

“I served as a technical and safety advisor to the group and helped 15 different crews from across the United States come together to accomplish our mission — to honor veterans and remember the historical significance of D-Day.”

Riley added that “preparations to return in 2024” are currently underway.

This unique event is open to the public, with a special focus on area veterans.
A spaghetti dinner with salad, bread, desserts and beverages, will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the Foscoe Grandfather Community Center followed by Riley’s informative presentation starting around 6:30 pm.

To express appreciation to area veterans, Moore added, they are invited to eat free of charge.

Cost for other guests is $15 per person. Children under 6 eat free.

“These dinners that we have, starting in the spring each year and ending in the fall, serve as our main fundraiser,” Moore said. “The money we bring in helps our neighbors through hard times and helps us give out scholarships every year to graduating seniors heading to college.“

Take-out meals will be available during the first hour.

The Foscoe Grandfather Community Center is located in the Foscoe Community at 233 Park Rd., Banner Elk.
