The five hotels have a combined 401 rooms, according to a description of the properties on the website. More information is available after signing a confidentiality agreement.

Speaking before the Boone Town Council in December 2012, hotelier Ashok Patel said the La Quinta Inn & Suites, Sleep Inn, Best Western Plus, Country Inn & Suites, Super 8, Red Carpet Inn, Highland Hills Motel and Scottish Inn were family-owned companies.

The Scottish Inn was condemned by the Town of Boone for building code violations in April 2012. Earlier this year, Jill Atfield Patel, the ex-wife of Ashok Patel, spoke before the Boone Town Council regarding the condemnation. According to meeting minutes, she said the Scottish Inn was under contract and estimated that the contract would close by November 2013. An extension for the demolition of the property was granted until the end of the year.

Patel previously owned Hampton Inn, but the bank seized that property after cash-flow problems emerged from the condemnation of the Scottish Inn, which had an $850,000 mortgage, according to Patel’s statement to the Boone Town Council in December 2012. Patel also noted at the council meeting that the Hampton Inn franchise was suing for more than $500,000 for liquidation damages on the franchise agreement.

Patel killed himself in January of 2013.

At least one family member of those who died in the carbon monoxide deaths in Room 225 of the Best Western Plus expressed intentions to sue pending the investigations into the hotel deaths.

Two weeks ago, a spokesman for the Boone Police Department said the investigations would be completed soon and forwarded to the District Attorney’s office.
