Weekend Roundup: Things To Do This Weekend in the High Country; Check ‘em Out & Make Plans: May 3-5

May 3, 2013. The High Country has so many wonderful events to offer its community and visitors. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

This Weekend’s Not-to-Miss Events


Friday, May 3

The Appalachian State University Craft Enrichment Sale:Professors, students and instructors participating in the university’s craft enrichment program will be selling their artwork in Harper Hall on ASU campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Crafts include jewelry, pottery, wood and glass work, paintings and many more.

Turchin Center Birthday Party: The Turchin Center in downtown Boone will celebrate 10 years since the gallery opened. The event will be free and open to the public and runs from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m during First Friday Art Crawl. There will be live music and performances for guests to enjoy.

Shine Dance Ensemble: Presenting the biblical creation story “In the Beginning” and “For His Envy” at 7:00 p.m. at Alliance Bible Fellowship. Admission to this event is free.

Saturday, May 4

Midnight at the OASIS: The 10th Annual OASIS benefit event will be held from 7 – 11 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. Tickets for the event are $35 per person, and can be purchased by calling 828-264-1532. There will be appetizers, live music and a cash bar. 

FARM Cafe’s Second Anniversary Event: From noon to 4 p.m., FARM Cafe will host live music by Brian Swanson and the Dashboard Hula Boys to mark their second anniversary in Boone. The event will also mark the beginning of the new summer schedule. 

Spaghetti Supper: Girl Scout Troop 10807 will host a spaghetti supper and silent auction from 5-8 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Boone. All proceeds from the spaghetti supper will go toward a trip to Disney for the troop in June.

Foscoe Community Park Clean-Up Day: Starting at 11 a.m. at Foscoe Grandfather Community Center, volunteers are welcome to rake and clean up the park. Snacks will be provided for volunteers.

Barbecue Fundraiser: Hosted the first Saturday of each month, the Todd Ruritan Club’s barbecue fundraiser will be from 4-7 p.m. at the South Fork Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. 

The Incredible Toy Company’s 20th Birthday:The Incredible Toy Company will host their birthday celebration from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring a bounce house and free prizes for each child. The store will feature 20 percent off sales throughout the celebration.

Watauga County Farmers’ Market: The much anticipated opening day of the Watauga County Farmers’ Market will feature all of the local vendors that the High Country has come to know, love and expect from the Farmers’ Market. For more information, please call 828-355-4918.

Fundraising 5K: The recreation management program at Appalachian State University will sponsor the annual Tom Moore 5K fundraiser May 4 at the Boone greenway. The race starts at 9 a.m. Registration is $15 if you registered in advance before May 1 and $20 on the day of the race. All proceeds from the race will go to support the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. FARM Cafe is sponsoring an early packet pickup and a pre-race pasta dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. May 3 at 167 W. King St. The meal includes pasta with or without meat, side salad, dessert and a drink. The pasta dinner will be donation based. The money raised by the pasta dinner will be split between FARM Cafe and Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

Carlton Gallery: “Mothering Peace Exhibition and Community Expressions” starts on May 4, including an artist reception from 2 to 5 p.m. The exhibition features artwork dedicated to peace and honoring Mother Earth. This event will also benefit The Twilight Inn, a new retirement village for pets whose owners can no longer care for them. For more information, call (828) 963-4288 or http://www.carltonartgallery.

Sunday, May 5

The Watauga County Band: The Watauga County Band will be performing its annual spring concert at the Rosen Concert Hall on ASU campus at 3:00 p.m. The event is free of charge.

Community Service Day: A community service day will be held at the 11 a.m. service May 5 at Rutherwood Baptist Church. Community firefighters, medical personnel and law enforcement officers are welcome to attend this special day. U2Chairist: Grace Lutheran Church will host U2Charist at 7 p.m. May 5. An offering will be collected at the event, with proceeds benefiting the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s malaria campaign. For more information, call (828) 264-2206.
