Community Poetry Event Dedicated to the Memory of Evelyn Shook Johnson to Be Held Saturday April 20

April 19, 2013. A Community Poetry Event dedicated to the memory of Evelyn Shook Johnson a beloved Librarian for over 35 years, who passed away from a heart attack in January, will be held at the Watauga County Public Library from 11:00 am – 12:30 p.m.

This event is co-sponsored by Behind the Stacks, a local poetry group and the Watauga County Public Library. Behind the Stacks is a poetry group that holds meetings on the third Thursday of each month in the Watauga County Library meeting room from 10 a.m. to noon.

In 2008, a group of High Country writers formed the group to encourage poets in the area. The group’s name comes from it’s first meeting place – the library.

This is an open, relaxed celebration of poetry. There are no elected officers, no dues, no required poetic skills. They offer an opportunity to learn about poetry, encouragement in writing and a time to share with others. Each month a different poet volunteers to chair the meeting, where they share poetry resources, read poems they have written and do a writing exercise if desired.
