One-Mile Fun Run, 10K and 5K and Costume Contest Benefiting Parent to Parent Family Support Network Held Oct. 27

Oct. 25, 2012. A 10K, 5K and one-mile fun walk/run will be held Oct. 27 at the Greenway adjacent to Watauga County Parks and Recreation in Boone. The event will benefit the Parent to Parent/Family Support Network of the High Country. There will be a costume contest for people and dogs and fun activities for kids as well. On-site registration, T-shirt and packet pickup begins at 8 a.m.

The 10K begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $35 the day of the race, or $30 prior to Oct. 27. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Costs are $25 the day of the race or $20 for early registration. The one-mile fun walk/roll begins at 9:30 a.m. Costs are $15 the day of the race and $10 for those who register early.

The event has been named The Charles R. Duke Race for Families in recognition of a generous gift from Duke, dean of the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University.

This is the second year for the event, for which the 10K race course has been certified by USA Track and Field, making it the only USATF certified course in the area.

Parent-to-Parent is a non-profit organization through Appalachian’s Reich College of Education that serves families who have children and youth with behavioral and emotional challenges, chronic illnesses or difficulties with learning, hearing, seeing, moving, or speaking, as well as high-risk or premature infants and families who are grieving from the loss of a child or infant. Services range from matching families to a trained volunteer for emotional support to connecting with hospital programs for children.
