Velma Hall

Velma Hall, D. Sept. 30, 2012
Mrs. Velma Warren Hall, age 92, of Silverstone Road, Zionville, passed away Sunday morning, September 30, 2012 at home. Born July 5, 1920 in Clinchfield, Virginia she was a daughter of the late Chalie Luke and Virgie Ella Perry Warren. Mrs. Hall was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and volunteered with Project on Aging and Hospice.

She is survived by her children; Harold Hall and wife Julia of Woodbridge, VA, Allen Hall of Zionville and Vedenia Sue Hall Austin and husband Jack of Vilas, three brothers; Charlie Warren and wife Larona and Perry Warren all of Arizona and Jim Warren and wife Rose of Tennessee, eight grandchildren; Sharon Ella Houck and husband Barry, Charlie Caldwell and wife Katie, Margaret Hall, Audrey Strough, Allen A. Hall, Caryll Sue Hall, Jack Austin III and Amber Austin. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; Amory W. Hall, one daughter; Roemilda Caldwell, two sisters; Fannie Shook and Virginia Warren, and one brother Russell Warren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Velma Hall will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Toby Oliver and Allen Hall. Entombment will follow at the Zionville Mausoleum. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to High Country Health Care System Hospice, 400 Shadowline Drive, Suite 100-B, Boone, NC 28607.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 o’clock until 7:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Sarah Johnson

Sarah Johnson, D. Sept. 29, 2012
Sarah “Faith” Thompson Johnson, age 83, of Boone, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, September 29, 2012, at Davant Extented Care Center of Blowing Rock Hospital. Early in life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at Willow Valley Baptist Church.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 15, 1929 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Charles Franklin Thompson and Minnie Davis Johnson. She was a retired 20 year employee of IRC/TRW, and a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church. Early in life, Mrs. Johnson accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at Willow Valley Baptist Church.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband of 62 years, R.C. Johnson of Boone; two sons, Rudy Charles Johnson and wife Teresa, of Boone and Ralph Carter Johnson, III and wife Betty, of Coshocton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Christopher Johnson and wife May of Coshocton, Ohio; Shannon Long and husband Chris of Cincinnati, Ohio and Jonathan Johnson, of Pensacola, Florida. She was blessed with two great-grandaughters, Rilei and Kalei Johnson of Coshocton, Ohio. She is also survived by two sisters, Sophia Safian of Deptford, NJ and Kathryn Norris of Boone; four sisters-in-law, Maude Thompson of Vilas, Mary Lee Thompson of Deep Gap; Nell Johnson and Phyllis Johnson of Boone; and one brother-in-law, Vaughn Brown of Hendersonville, NC. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Greer, Mattie Edmisten, Ann Brown and Sue Greene and four brothers, Boyd Thompson, John Thompson, Don Thompson and Walter Thompson; five brothers-in-law James Greer, Clyde Edmisten, Billy Norris, Charles Safian and Joe Johnson and a nephew, Joe Thompson.

Funeral services for Sarah “Faith” Thompson Johnson will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, at 2:00 o’clock, at Rutherwood Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Rev. Gary Lawrence, Rev. Herbert McCoy, and Rev. Ralph Johnson. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will recieve friends Wednesday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Mildred Combs

Mildred Combs, D. Sept. 27, 2012
Mildred Kate Combs, age 71, of Heritage of Sugar Mountain, Newland, and a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Thursday morning, September 27, 2012 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Born January 7, 1941, in the Green Valley Community, she was a daughter of Jessie Alvin and Lula Ella Farthing Combs. Mildred was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church. She was a front desk manager for the former Cabana and Cardinal Motels in Boone.

Survivors include three children, Randy Greene and wife, Denise, of Westmoreland, Tennessee, Elaine Guy and husband, Randall, of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, and Michael Watson and fiancé, Kerry Ashley, of Elk Park; grandson, Christopher Greene of Wartburg, TN; granddaughter, Heather Guy of Gray, TN. and great-granddaughters, Makayla Greene of Westmoreland, TN; and Sierra Tester of Gray, TN. A number of great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lee Alvin Greene and a sister, Boots Farthing Parker.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday morning, September 29, 2012, at 11 o’clock at the Combs Family Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Tim Bunton.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

William Culler

William Culler, D. Sept. 26, 2012
William Odell Culler, age 91 of 6104 Howard’s Creek Road in Boone, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012.

Mr. Culler is survived by his wife Celia C. Culler of the home; two sons, Dewey Culler and wife Anne, and Jamie Culler all of Boone; two sisters, Ruby Jones of Boone, and Carolyn Miller and husband J. D. of Sophia, NC, one brother, Estel Culler of Boone. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Belle Moretz Culler, one daughter, Mary Alice Coffey, and two infant sons, Willie and Ronnie Culler, his father and mother, Grover Franklin and Josephine Pennell Culler, two brothers, Armon and Baxter Culler and two sisters, Dora Culler Lewis and Nancy Culler Justice.

Funeral services for William Odell Culler will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00. Officiating will be Reverend Arvil Hardy and Reverend Mike Townsend. Burial will follow in the Culler Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by American Leigon Post 130 and Color Guard provided by DAV Chapter 90.

Leslie Hale, Jr., D. Sept. 26, 2012
Dr. Leslie Morgan Hale, Jr. of Chapel Hill and Banner Elk, NC passed away Wednesday morning at his Banner Elk home.

Dr. Hale was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, physician and friend. Dr. Hale was born January 10, 1935 in Atlanta, Ga. to Kathryn Reardon Hale and Leslie Morgan Hale, Sr. Dr. Hale is survived by his adoring wife, Anne Kaye Calhoun Hale, his brother, Dr. Robert Vernon Hale, of Chapel Hill (wife Sandra Street Hale), his children, Robert Andrew Hale, Sr. of Charlotte, NC (wife Eleanor Butz Hale) and Patrick Calhoun Hale of Charlotte, NC (wife Katharine Malmsjo Hale) and four beautiful grandchildren, Robert Andrew Hale, Jr., Frances Sewell Hale, Jayne Morgan Hale and Lilly Calhoun Hale. Dr. Hale was preceded in death by his beloved son Leslie Morgan Hale, III in 2004.

Dr. Hale graduated with a B.A. in History from the University of North Carolina in 1957 where he was a brother of the Kappa Alpha Order. He was a Tar Heel born and bred. He then completed graduate school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1961. He completed his medical internship at the Medical University of Virginia in 1962 and his residency at the University of North Carolina’s Memorial Hospital and McPherson Hospital in 1967.

Dr. Hale served as a Captain in the United States Air Force and was Commanding Officer of the 6044th USAF Medical Facility at Kimpo Air Force Base in Korea. He was the United States Air Force Liaison Officer for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine from 1967-1972. Dr. Hale was a private practice Ophthalmologist and co-founder of Chapel Hill Ophthalmology Clinic, along with his brother, Robert, from 1973-2008. Dr. Hale was a professor of Ophthalmology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine from 1967-1988. He was the Attending Ophthalmic surgeon at Watts Hospital and Durham Regional Hospital from 1973-2002 and Emeritus Attending from 2002-present. Since 2005 Dr. Hale has been Executive Vice President and Director of Medical Research for Hinson & Hale Medical Technologies, Inc.

Dr. Hale was a Fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons. He was a diplomat for the American Board of Ophthalmology as well as a member of the American Medical Association, Durham-Orange County Medical Society and the North Carolina Eye Society.

As a husband, Dr. Hale was the most caring, patient, supporting and loving person. His love for Anne Kaye has always been and always will be an inspiration to his children. Dr. Hale loved his children with all of his heart and he was the most generous, gracious and loving father any child could ever ask for. As a father he imparted wisdom, guidance, caring and compassion. He was a true role model for his children as to what a great husband and father should be. As a physician, Dr. Hale was beloved by his patients and staff. His caring and compassionate nature was evident in the loyalty of his patients and staff throughout his 35 years of practice. He always took the extra time to hold a hand and assure his patients that they were his number one priority. His friends always appreciated his gentle, dry wit and they always enjoyed the wonderful dinner parties that he and Anne Kaye would host. Dr. Hale was the proudest grandfather in the world. He adored his four grandchildren and they loved their “granddaddy” with all of their hearts.

In his retirement Dr. Hale enjoyed going on long mountain hikes, scenic drives with his loving wife and spending as much time with his children and grandchildren as possible. Our family is blessed to have had such a wonderfully caring and wise southern gentleman.

Memorial services will begin at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 2nd at University Presbyterian Church, 209 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC. The family will be receiving guests at a reception immediately following the service.

James Goins

James Goins, D. Sept. 26, 2012
James Avery Goins, 65, of Boone, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Born April 10, 1947 in Boone, he was a son of Avery Oliver and Lucille Grimes Goins. After graduation from Watauga High School, James joined the U.S. Marine Corp. He retired from the NC Department of Transportation with 31 years service. James was a member of the Mt. Nebo Unity Church in Jonesville where he especially enjoyed the church music and Monday night Bible study in Boone.

Mr. Goins is survived by his wife of 39 years, Andrea Louise Hagler Goins; step-daughter, Monica Denise Williams and husband, Lt. Col. Maury Williams, of Kings Mountain; six sisters, Brenda Whittington of Boone, Cora Cox and husband, Harold of Galax, Va., Lisa and Shelia Goins, and Libby Maxwell and husband, Gene, all of Boone, and Priscilla Wade and husband, Russell of Wilkesboro; brother, Adrian Goins and wife, Belinda, of Boone; grandchildren, Sierra, Jessica & John Winkler, and great grandchildren, Briana Winkler, Maury Allen, Briana Williams and McKenzie Currence. And host of nieces and nephews also survive.

James had many friends at the N.C. Department of Transportation and the Boone area. He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Winkler and one sister, Pat White.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 30, 2012, at 3 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Bishop R. C. Bryant, Rev. Chris Eidse, Rev. Joe Gray and Rev. Wally Harriston.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 until 3 PM, one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial, with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow at Clarissa Hill Cemetery.

Amy Evans, D. Sept. 25, 2012
Amy Lucille Adair Evans, age 101, of Woodbriar Drive, Sugar Grove, passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 25, 2012, at her home. Born June 4, 1911 in Lebanon, Indiana, she was a daughter of James and Ethel Bocok Adair. Mrs. Evans was a homemaker, housewife, and a retired secretary from Shumate Printing Company in Indianapolis.

She is survived by her son, James Randolph Evans, of Sugar Grove; one brother, John Adair, of Florida; granddaughter, Michelle Peeples and husband, Kenny, and great-granddaughter, Julie Hayes, all of Griffin, Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oren Randolph Evans, and her daughter-in-law, Kathleen ‘Kitty’ Evans.

Private entombment will be in the Washington Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ms. Darlene Moretz Boggs, age 47, of Newton, died Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in Hickory.

Ms. Boggs is survived by one son, Jeffrey L. Cantor and wife Lindsey of Lincolnton, her father, John L. Moretz and step-mother, Betty, of Iron Station, North Carolina, her Mother Luvenia Ham Moretz, and partner Al Hallman, of Lincolnton, one brother Michael J. Moretz and fiancee’ Cyndi, of Lincolnton, one half sister, Miranda Schrum and husband Jed of Lincolnton, and one half brother, Barry Leger and wife Sha of Hickory, maternal grandmother, Grace Ham, of West Jefferson, one aunt, two uncles and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Brian Leger.

Graveside services for Ms. Darlene Moretz Boggs will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Norris-Tabernacle Cemetery. Reverend Eugene Seitz will officiate.
