Weekend Roundup: 17 Things To Do This Weekend in the High Country; Check ‘em Out: Sept. 28 to 30

Sept. 28, 2012. The High Country has so many wonderful events to offer its community and visitors. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country. 

Chanticleers vs. Mountaineers

Two of the Carolinas’ best NCAA Division I football programs of the millennium will square off Saturday when the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-2, 0-0) come to The Rock to take on the No. 17/16 Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-2, 1-1). Since 2000, ASU is North Carolina and South Carolina’s winningest Division I football program, with a 121-42 record overall. The Chanticleers of Conway, S.C., are not far behind, with a 65-41 record since the program’s inception in 2003, good for sixth best in the Carolinas.

Pack Walk for Homeless Pets

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness for the homeless pet crisis in the High Country. Leashed and vaccinated dogs are welcome. The walk will be two miles around Boone at your own pace and will end with a gathering back at Green Mother Goods. An adoption event will follow the walk with a celebration and raffle to benefit the participating shelters and rescue groups.

Tweetsie’s Ghost Train Halloween Festival

The High Country’s 23rd spooktacular season of Tweetsie Railroad’s Ghost Train kicks off tonight and continues every Friday and Saturday night through Oct. 27. Join Ghost Train engineer Casey Bones and his macabre crew for a scary journey on a train inescapably haunted by its past. The tracks lead into the darkness of a railroading era filled with terror and tragedy. Guests will experience chills and thrills as ghosts and ghouls from the old railways pursue the Ghost Train’s passengers around every bend, and through every eerie forest.

Meet ‘n Greet for Rep. Jonathan Jordan

The Ashe County GOP is sponsoring a “Meet ‘n Greet” for incumbent Rep. Jonathan Jordan Friday, September 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the new Republican headquarters, located on 102 N. Jefferson Avenue in West Jefferson. If you have questions to ask or would just like to express your opinion to your North Carolina representative, stop by. Coffee, drinks, and refreshments will be served.

Volunteer with Wild South

Sept. 29 is National Public Lands Day. It is the single largest day of volunteer service with over 170,000 volunteers serving their public lands in 2011. This year Wild South is calling on volunteers to meet up for an exciting day in the Linville Gorge Wilderness. The day will begin with a workshop hosted by the Western North Carolina Alliance who will teach volunteers to identify non-native invasive plants and discuss how you can help defend your own property from these pests.

The Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance introduces fresh actors and dancers in its annual First Year Student Showcase in the intimate I.G. Greer Studio Theatre on campus.

Live Music

Doc Watson Tribute Concert with The Kruger Brothers 

The Todd Community Preservation Organization will host a Doc Watson Tribute Concert featuring the Kruger Brothers on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Walter and Anne Cook Park. For the last decade Watson, who lived just down the road in Deep Gap, generously performed in Todd to the delight of neighbors, friends and admirers. Proceeds from his annual August performance enabled the tradition of live traditional mountain music to continue in Todd.

Appalachian Philharmonia

The Appalachian Philharmonia performs works by Handel, Bach and Debussy in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. The philharmonia is conducted by Dr. Chung Park. Guest soloist is flutist Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham. Both are members of the Hayes School of Music faculty at Appalachian. The philharmonia is a faculty-student collaborative within the music school.
