Charles Timothy Sutphin, D. Sept. 16, 2012
Charles Timothy Sutphin, age 65, of Boone passed away on September 16, 2012 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, he was born May 9, 1947 a son of the late Eugene Hubert and Helen Reece Sudderth Sutphin.

He worked for Tweetsie Railroad as Treasurer for 20 years.

Tim was of the Christian faith and enjoyed computers and working crossword puzzles.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jason Sutphin.

Tim has left to cherish his memory his: brothers, Jim Sutphin of Newland, Joe Sutphin and wife Bobbie of Gray, TN; niece, Meredith Susan Sutphin Hayes; nephew, David Sutphin.

Funeral services for Charles Timothy Supthin will be conducted on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 3:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel. Inurnment will follow in the Montezuma Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: the American Cancer Society at 120 Executive Park Bldg 1 Asheville, NC 28801.

Rev. Harry Lee Turbyfill, D. Sept. 16, 2012
Rev. Harry Lee Turbyfill, age 75, of Cranberry passed away on September 16, 2012 surrounded by his family at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born February 17, 1937 a son of the late James and Lockie Guy Turbyfill.

He was a Baptist Minister and served as Pastor at: Cranberry Baptist, Big Meadows, Fall Creek, Pleasant Hill, Henson Creek, Belview, Pilgrim, Pleasant Valley and Valley Haven Baptist Church’s.

Harry enjoyed coon hunting, singing and watching the Atlanta Braves.

Along with his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his: brothers, Ernest “Walkie” Turbyfill, Howard Turbyfill, Rev. Raymond Turbyfill; sisters, Flossie Smith, Gertrude Winebarger, Betty Ann McMahon.

A man of courage and conviction who loved his wife and family dearly, Harry has left to cherish his memory his: wife Joyce Ann Turbyfill of the home; children, Rebecca Beaston and husband Mark of Albemarle, NC, Harry Lee Turbyfill, Jr. and wife Ruth of Hampton, TN, Margaret Ann Long and husband Rodney of Morganton, NC, Shawn Turbyfill and wife Marandi of Cranberry, NC; sisters, Josephine Brewer of Newland, NC, Gladys Preswood and husband John of Banner Elk, NC, Frances Gouge of Cranberry, NC; brother, Clay Turbyfill of Morganton, NC; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Harry Lee Turbyfill will be conducted on Tuesday, September 18th at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Lander Heafner officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 19th at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the Cranberry Cemetery for 11:00 a.m. graveside services. Pallbearers will be members of the Avery County Sheriff’s Office, Banner Elk Police Department and Newland Police Department.

Millie Howard, D. Sept. 15, 2012
Millie C. Howard, age 93, of Roan Mountain, TN, passed away on September 15, 2012 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.

She was born April 10, 1919 in Cincinnati, OH, a daughter of the late Peter and Mary Teufel Schenkel.

Along with her parents, Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Albert G. Howard, five brothers and three sisters.

Left to cherish Millie’s memory are: her son and daughter-in-law, Jack. and Catherine Melk of Estero, FL/Newland, NC; grandson, Dave Melk of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughter, Amy Doane of Atlanta, GA; and three great grandchildren, Josh, George and Amanda.

A graveside memorial will be announced at a later date and will be conducted at St. Mary’s Cemetery in St. Bernard, OH.

Buddie Thomas, D. Sept. 14, 2012
Buddie Thomas, age 73, of Cranberry passed away on September 14, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, she was born June 1, 1939 a daughter of the late Abe and Macie Cook Hopson.

Along with her parents, Buddie was preceded in death by her: husband, Bob Thomas; sister, Nancy; infant brother, Harry; mother-in-law, Rosie Thomas; father-in-law, Howard Thomas; brother-in-law, Harold B. Thomas.

Buddie has left to cherish her memory her: sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby and Daymon Pritchard of Altamont, NC, Anita and Charles Pritchard of Newland, NC, Donna and Danny Odom of Elk Park, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pat and Dorothy Hopson of Elizabethton, TN, Walt and Linda Hopson of Shell Creek, TN; sisters-in-law, Kay Turbyfill of Banner Elk, NC, Delma Beam of VA; several nieces and nephews; special family members, Keith Vance, Russell Turbyfill, Dyllon Greene; special friends, Scottie Taylor, Bobby Clowser, Evan and Angie Vance Knox.

Funeral services for Buddie Thomas will be conducted on Sunday, September 16th at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. David Montgomery and Rev. Cody Montgomery officiating. Music will be under the direction of Seth Montgomery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will be Monday, September 17th 10:00 a.m. in the Elk Park Cemetery. Buddies nephews will serve as pall bearers with the men of Blevin’s Chapel Church serving as honorary pall bearers.
