Dewayne “Hammer” McKinney, D. Sept. 7, 2012
Dewayne “Hammer” McKinney, age 39, of Newland passed away on September 7, 2012 at his residence.

He was born December 23, 1972 a son of Wayne and Ann Hall McKinney of Bakersville.

Dewayne was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Along with his parents, Dewayne has left to cherish his memory his: brothers and sisters, Terry Lynn McKinney of Newland, Sherry McKinney of Newland, David “Butch” Evans and wife Grace of Hudson, NC, Cindy Gragg and husband John of Lenoir, NC, Debra Evans of Wooster, OH; several special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Dewayne Edward McKinney will be conducted on Wednesday, September 12th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Turbyfill officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the service hour. A private graveside will follow.

Roger Gene Platt

Roger Gene Platt, D. Sept. 8, 2012
Roger Gene Platt, 68, peacefully passed at his home in Newland, North Carolina surrounded by his family on September 8, 2012.

Roger was born May 30, 1944, in Marion, North Carolina to Leonard and Beulah Platt. He was the first born of that union. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Martha Nance Platt, two half-brothers, Jack Platt and Leonard Platt, Jr., a nephew, Greg Hovis, and a niece, Joy Ogburn. Surviving Roger to enjoy life in his memory are his two sons, Todd Platt and his partner, Laura Smith, of Raleigh, and Brad Platt of Newland and Montana; a beloved grandson, Sawyer Gene Platt of Missoula, Montana; four devoted sisters, Nancy Hovis and Johnny of Titusville, FL, Martha Tennant of Supply, NC, Susan Ware and George of Newland, NC and Jane Moore and Gary of Jonas Ridge, NC, and many nieces and nephews, and friends whom he held close to his heart. Sir Henry and Sir Clyde were his faithful Golden retriever companions over the past decade accompanying him on many fishing excursions to local fishing holes and to Holden Beach. Sir Clyde even listened attentively while Roger read book passages to him from many of the WWII history books that he loved.

Roger was a lover. A Lover of family, children, and friends foremost. A lover of animals – from the birds outside his windows to the big horned sheep meticulously scaling a Montana mountainside. A love of music – from old time Bluegrass and Roy Acuff’s Great Speckled bird though Jimmy Buffet’s music and on to Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. A lover of humor and tall tales – woven from Crossnore high School skits to days and nights under the big sky in Montana.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 12th, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Roger’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Chronic Disease Fund, www.cdfund.org.

Matthew “Huey” Trivette, D. Sept. 7, 2012
Matthew “Huey” Trivett, age 56, of Beech Mountain passed away on September 7, 2012 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.

A native of Avery County, he was born April 12, 1956 a son of Bert and Ann Trivett of Beech Mountain.

He was an outstanding high school athlete in football, wrestling and baseball and lettered in all three sports. He also played football for Lees McRae College and he loved to watch the Green Bay Packers.

Matthew was preceded in death by his brother Lincoln Trivett.

A devoted friend, accommodating and caring person, Matthew has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Sommer D. Trivett of Hampton, TN.; brother, Jimmy Trivett of Beech Mountain; granddaughter, Tatum Addison Cooke of Hampton, TN; nephews, Nathan Trivett, Jake Trivett, Matt Trivett, Luke Trivett all of Beech Mountain; great niece, Candice Trivett of Beech Mountain; best friend, Nub Taylor of Newland; step-son, Jordan Trivett of Minneapolis.

Funeral services for Matthew “Huey” Trivett will be conducted on Thursday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Mr. Nub Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, pallbearers and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday, September 14th at 1:00 p.m. to go in procession to McGuire Cemetery for graveside services.

Katie Church Sluder

Katie Church Sluder, D. Sept. 7, 2012
Katie C. Sluder, age 79, of Newland passed away on September 7, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 18, 1933 in Watauga County, NC.

Katie was a member of First Baptist Church Newland.

She graduated High School in 1951 and graduated nursing school in 1952, the same year she married her husband Richard Sluder. Together Richard and Katie founded Sluder Floral Business while raising their three sons.

Katie remembered everyone that she loved by sending cards to them on special occasions.

She was preceded in death by her: father, Robert J. Church, Sr.; husband, A. Richard Sluder; sister, Helen Church Orr.

Katie loved all of her family and friends equally and has left to cherish her memory her: three sons, Richard A. Sluder and wife Teresa, Bernie R. Sluder and wife Karen, William H. Sluder and fiance Maria all of Newland; brother, Robert J. Church of Lenoir; sister, Peggy E. Church of Newland; grandchildren, Richard A. Sluder of Newland, Jessica S. Long and husband Adam of Newland, Melissa D. Sluder of Newland, Matthew Sluder of Newland, Maresa S. Gracely and husband Chris of Fountain Valley, CA, Lora S. Daniels and husband Brian of Newland, Jena S. Burnop and husband Zach of Newland, William Shawn Sluder and fiance Margie of Newland; great grandchildren, Haley Grace Daniels, Diesel Robert Daniels, Sawyer Burnop, Ryder Avery Long.

Funeral services for Katie C. Sluder will be conducted on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 12:00 pm at the First Baptist Church Newland with Dr. Bill M. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Richard Sluder Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: George Andrews, Kenny Calhoun, Nat Clark, Roy Rouse, Ford Jones, Charley Ballard. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Terry Ballard, Marvin Holtsclaw, Alec Crowder, Wallace Thompson, Greg French, Brian Crowder, Ernest Norwood, Donald Beam, Jack Nelson. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services at the church.
