‘The Appalachian Plays of Romulus Linney’ to be Discussed Aug. 28 at the Watauga County Public Library

Aug. 9, 2012. Area residents can learn about the plays of the late Romulus Linney during the Aug. 28 community conversation titled “The Appalachian Plays of Romulus Linney” to be presented at Watauga County Public Library.

Dr. Susan S. Cole, professor emerita and former chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University, will present the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. The public will have opportunities to share memories, stories and anecdotes about Linney. Light refreshments will be provided.

A well-known playwright in New York, Linney had strong Boone connections, and many of his plays dealt with regional mountain themes. He died in upstate New York in 2011. Cole, retired chair of the theater and dance department at Appalachian, was a close friend and colleague of Linney.

The program precedes a two-day event in late September that is part of a dedication and opening of the Romulus Linney Papers and Exhibit in Belk Library and Information Commons.

Excerpts from stories about Linney will be read at the tribute Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Valborg Theatre. Stories to be considered for this event must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 24, to Cynthia Harbeson, harbesoncd@appstate.edu, or by mail to Harbeson at Belk Library and Information Commons, ASU Box 32026, Boone, NC 28608. All submissions will become part of the archives in the library’s special collections.

The September event will include master classes conducted by New York professionals for theater students, acting workshops, and the dedication and opening of the Romulus Linney Papers and Exhibit. It is sponsored by the Belk Library and Information Commons and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
