Local Art Stirs the Batter at Cornbread Cook-Off June 23

June 18, 2012. On June 23, more excitement than what a typical Saturday brings will be cooking in Linville. Not only is it the Old Hampton Store’s Cornbread Cook-Off, held annually as far back as any can remember and now the subject of an article in the June edition of WNC Magazine, but it is also the first Avery Tour de Art of the year, and the reception date for the Avery Arts Council’s current exhibition: Mountains, Legends and Lore.

To celebrate all things homemade and creative, the Avery Arts Council will be hosting four artists’ demonstrations: wood turner Jim Caskowski, basket weaver Connie Dellinger-Brooks and exhibiting artists Linda Elksnin and Lillian Trettin. These artists will be on hand during the day, showing the public what they do best. Lillian and Linda will both be demonstrating their artistic mediums and inviting the public to join in. The reception for Mountains, Legends, and Lore is from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening; like the rest of the day’s events, it is free and open to the public.

Next Saturday, make the blossoming Linville Arts District your destination. You could wind up judging homemade cornbread, listening to live bluegrass, learning a new craft or viewing local art. In most cases, you’ll do a combination of them all.
