Mr. Allen Kay Taylor, age 82, of West Jefferson passed away Saturday, April 15, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Burchett and Rev. Mark Harless officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendly Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12-2pm on Tuesday at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mr. Taylor was born in Ashe County on Saturday, July 27, 1929 to the late Edward Foster Taylor and Carrie Lee Hardin.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Wyatt Taylor; two half-brothers; Russell Taylor and Glen Taylor; and two half-sisters; Ruth Hardin and Lozelle Hardin.

Mr. Taylor is survived by one son; Steve Taylor and wife Tammy of West Jefferson; one daughter; Elizabeth “Libby” Matthews and husband Kenneth of Fayetteville; two brothers; Mack Taylor and wife Jean of West Jefferson, and Ron Taylor and wife Angie of West Jefferson; one sister, Collene Weaver of West Jefferson; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mattie 'Alice' Perry

Mattie “Alice” Perry, D. April 15, 2012

Mattie “Alice” Furches Perry, age 92, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Ashe Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Alice was born on January 23, 1920 in Ashe County to the late Thomas and Margaret Ellen Seatz Furches. Alice could accomplish anything she set her mind to. At a very young age, she stood on a chair to make biscuits and pies. She was a published writer and an advocate for the development of Buffalo Community. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, gardening, and spending time with her friends and family. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, including her mother and sister-in-law, as well as her beloved husband of 67 years, Woodrow, before his death in 2007.

She is preceded in death by her husband Woodrow Perry; an infant son, William Thomas Perry; two daughters, Lucille Taylor of Trinity and Thelma Annas of Hudson.

Mrs. Perry is survived by two sons, Lamon Perry and his wife Paula of West Jefferson, Russell Perry and his wife Donnivee of Randleman; two daughters, Edith Richardson of Hudson, JoAnne Gaines and her husband Ron of Trinity; two sons-in-law, Herman Taylor of Trinity and Steve Annas of Hudson; a special daughter, Ruth Ann Rash of West Jefferson; 17 Grandchildren; 22 Great-Grandchildren;2 Great-Great-Grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Ashe Memorial Hospital for the excellent care given to Mrs. Perry during her stay in the hospital.

Joseph Harold Ashley, D. April 14, 2012

Mr. Joseph Harold Ashley age 84, of Warrensville died on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson. Mr. Ashley was born on August 29, 1927 in Ashe County, NC to Donavan Vance and Mamie Combs Ashley. Mr. Ashley was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Sarah “Sally” Burkett Ashley. Mr. Ashley served his country in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1949. He was a member of West Jefferson First Baptist Church. Harold enjoyed working with his hands and worked for many years as a machinist at Sprague Electric. He loved his wife, son and all his family.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of West Jefferson with Rev. Ken Morris and Rev. Michael Lea. officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Ashley is survived by: one son, Joseph Harold Ashley Jr. of Warrensville, one sister, Dorothy Peeler of Warrensville, one grandson, Joseph Brandon Ashley also surviving are two nieces.

Barbara Ann Neaves Farmer, D. April 13, 2012

Mrs. Barbara Ann Neaves Farmer age 57, of West Jefferson, NC died on Friday, April 13, 2012 at the Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC. Mrs. Farmer was born on July 14, 1954 in Ashe County, NC to the late Jones and Mary Campbell Neaves. Mrs. Farmer was preceded in death by her parents, and infant brother.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Monday at Badger Funeral Home with moment of reflection to follow.

Mrs. Farmer is survived by, her husband of 41 years: Joseph Farmer, four brothers – Kenneth Neaves and wife Ruth, Gerald Neaves and wife Rosie, Allen Neaves and wife Ruth all of Lansing, and Wayne Neaves and wife Joyce of Hickory two sisters – Brenda Sue Hartsog of Hickory, Rebecca Allen and husband James of Lansing, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Roten Calhoun

Ruth Roten Calhoun, D. April 9, 2012

Mrs. Ruth Roten Calhoun, age 91, of West Jefferson, died Monday, April 9, 2012 at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 11:00am at Boone Family Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Roten, Rev. Fred Houck, and Rev. Dean Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30pm on Friday, April 13, 2012 at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Calhoun was born in Ashe County on Thursday, September 23, 1920 to the late James Roby Roten and Elizabeth Roten. She was a member of Mount Paddy Church and also she enjoyed making quilts for everyone.

She is survived by two sons; Joseph Calhoun and wife Ann of Michigan and Jerry Calhoun and wife Ruby of West Jefferson; One daughter; Janette Danielson and husband Matthew of West Jefferson; One sister; Jewel Roten of Todd; Four grandchildren; Joseph Calhoun II, Jennifer Heater and husband Roger, Lori Calhoun, and Leslie Calhoun; Four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
